Liverpool Rejected £60m Bayern Bid For Teen Winger: Was It The Right Call?

Liverpool Transfer News: Liverpool’s summer rebuild has given Andoni Iraola several attacking options as the club adjust to life after Mohamed Salah. Bradley Barcola and Cody Gakpo offer quality on the left, while Víctor Muñoz and Federico Chiesa provide alternatives on the opposite flank. That depth allows Iraola to rotate without relying on one player every week.

Yet Liverpool’s plans extend beyond the current campaign. Rio Ngumoha, an 18-year-old English winger, offers a different option with his acceleration, close control and willingness to take on defenders. His contract runs until June 2028, giving the club time to develop him, although Liverpool must eventually secure his long-term future.

Those qualities have started to show in his performances this season. Ngumoha has made 10 appearances across all competitions in 2026/27, recording two assists but no goals. Both assists came against Villarreal in the Champions League, while his six Premier League appearances have brought 170 minutes. He has completed 20 dribbles in Europe and maintained 84% passing accuracy, numbers that prove his ability to trouble defenders despite limited senior experience.

According to The Telegraph, Bayern Munich offered approximately £60 million for the teenager during the summer as they sought to strengthen their attack. Liverpool rejected the approach and insisted Ngumoha wasn’t for sale. Bayern subsequently signed Ismael Saibari from PSV Eindhoven for a reported £41.8 million.

Liverpool Transfer News: Were Liverpool right to reject Bayern’s £60m offer?

Liverpool made the right call. Although £60 million represents a substantial fee for a teenager with limited first-team minutes, selling Ngumoha would leave the club searching for another young winger with similar one-on-one ability. Replacing that potential could prove expensive, particularly as transfer fees continue to rise.

Iraola’s high-pressing approach demands wide players who can attack isolated full-backs, carry the ball forward and react quickly after losing possession. Ngumoha already shows promise in the first two areas, but he still needs to improve his end product and defensive work. His current statistics suggest potential rather than a finished product.

Liverpool should give the youngster meaningful minutes while protecting his development from unrealistic expectations. With his contract running until 2028, the club should prioritise renewal talks before his leverage increases. Bayern’s reported offer shows the market already values his potential highly, but Liverpool must help him turn that promise into consistent contributions, starting with his first goal of the season.
