From 199 to a golden duck: How have India’s Test players fared against New Zealand A so far?

Several of India’s senior Test team players featured in the first two four-day matches against New Zealand A. Here’s how they’ve performed so far.

Devdutt Padikkal

M: 2 | 311 runs at 77.75, HS: 199, 1 hundred, 1 fifty | 2 wickets at 5.5, BBI 2/11

Devdutt Padikkal has been the star so far for India A on the New Zealand tour. He is the leading run-scorer of the series, having amassed 311 runs in four innings at an average of 77.75. His 199-run knock in the second innings of the first unofficial Test put India A in a strong position despite conceding a lead.

He backed it up with another half-century, scoring 80 in the first innings of the second unofficial Test before bagging a golden duck in the second. Padikkal also tried his hand with the ball in the first game and picked up two wickets in five overs.

Yashasvi Jaiswal

M: 2 | 177 runs at 59, HS: 155, 1 hundred

Jaiswal struggled in the first three innings of this series, getting out to a swinging new ball. However, he found his groove on the final day of the second game, smashing an aggressive 155* off just 162 deliveries with 15 fours and five sixes. With one more game to go, the southpaw can certainly look to gain more confidence ahead of the two-match Test series against the senior New Zealand team.

Dhruv Jurel

M: 2 | 108 runs at 36, HS: 105, 1 hundred

Like Jaiswal, even Jurel has very little to show for his efforts apart from a stunning century in the first innings of the second unofficial Test. He helped India recover from 160-6 to 346 with his captain’s knock of 105 runs. He also kept wicket really well, which is very important given that Rishabh Pant is still a doubt for the Test series.

Sai Sudharsan

M: 2 | 143 runs at 35.75, HS: 91, 1 fifty

Sudharsan batted at four in the first game before moving up the order to open in the second. He showed his ability to tackle the conditions and scored 143 runs in four innings. His best score of 91 came when India A were struggling at 10-2 in the second innings of the first unofficial Test.

KL Rahul

M: 1 | 4 runs at 2, HS: 4

KL Rahul played only the first unofficial Test and endured a forgettable outing. He scored four runs across two innings, facing only 23 deliveries. He is one of the most senior batters in the Test team and will be expected to come good in the Test series later this month.

Washington Sundar

M: 2 | 60 runs at 20, HS: 52, 1 fifty | 3 wickets at 45.33, BBI 1/26

Sundar’s batting came to the fore in the first game of the series, where he scored 52 in the second innings. With the ball, the off-spinners mostly did a holding job, conceding runs at an economy of 2.72 and picking up three wickets in as many innings.

Manav Suthar

M: 1 | 22 runs at 22 | 0 wickets in 16 overs

Manav Suthar began his Test career on a high, picking up 23 wickets in three matches. However, he was always going to play a limited role in New Zealand conditions. He scored 22 runs in the only innings he batted and didn’t pick up a wicket in 16 overs he bowled.

Akash Deep

M: 2 | 3 wickets at 47, BBI 2/57 | 93 runs at 46.5, HS: 68, 1 fifty

Akash Deep failed to provide consistent breakthroughs in the first two matches of the series. He took three wickets in the 58.3 overs he delivered. However, his batting ability was on show in the first innings of the second unofficial Test, where he scored 68 batting at No.9.

Anshul Kamboj

M: 1 | 4 wickets at 25.75, BBI 3/52 | 33 runs at 16.5, HS: 23

Kamboj made his Test debut on England tour last year but couldn’t add to his only Test cap since then. However, he fared decently in the only game he played on this tour, picking up four wickets, including a three-wicket haul in the first innings. He also hung around with the bat, scoring 10 and 23 runs while batting at No.8.

Mukesh Kumar

M: 1 | 5 wickets at 17.4, BBI 5/87

Mukesh Kumar was the best bowler for India in the second unofficial Test. Playing for the first time on the tour, the 33-year-old picked up a five-wicket haul, limiting New Zealand A’s lead to only 78 runs. He found decent movement through the air, and also kept a lid on the run-scoring by bowling accurate lines and lengths.

Mohammed Siraj

M: 1 | 4 wickets at 29.5, BBI 4/118

Once again delivering in clutch moments for India, Siraj was once again at it at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. As the conditions became easy for batting, Siraj kept steaming in and was rewarded with four wickets. The 32-year-old also sent down 35 overs in the first innings and supported Mukesh well.
