The former Ireland striker feels Lampard must decide whether to persist with his favoured front-foot style or take a more pragmatic approach on the pitch.
Speaking to OLBG, Doyle said: “Coventry were going out and bossing the league with nice football, but then you have to adapt in the Premier League.
“Their fixture list hasn’t helped them, in fairness. But then, what do you do as a manager?
“Do you play like you did last season, open, expansive, great football, or do you adopt an approach more like Hull, who are fighting for everything, putting everyone behind the ball, and making it really difficult?
“Do you change your style of play? I’d hold back on judging Coventry so far, because their fixtures have been particularly tough, but they’ve got decent players and a good goalkeeper.
“A friend of mine, Stephen Hunt, looks after Coventry’s Carl Rushworth. He was their player of the season last year, and they spent a good few pounds to sign him and give themselves a chance.
“They’ve got a good manager in Frank Lampard who knows what the Premier League is like.
“If he got them promoted and playing as well as they did last season, he clearly knows what he’s doing.
“But it comes down to sticking to what got you promoted versus doing what’s needed to stay in the Premier League.”
