Rafael Espinoza Wants Naoya Inoue Before Moving Up

Rafael Espinoza has his sights set on Naoya Inoue, citing the Japanese superstar as his main reason to stay at 126 pounds. The WBO featherweight champion is also realistic, keeping the door open to move up to super featherweight if elite opportunities don’t materialize.

At 6’1″, the Mexican titlist wants unification honors at featherweight, knowing a win over Inoue punches his ticket straight into pound-for-pound conversations. He is even game to travel to Tokyo to make it happen.

“There’s also a big fight, the Inoue fight, and I think that’s the fight that would launch me into the world pound-for-pound rankings. That’s my dream,” Espinoza said to The Ring.

Landing the bout is another story. Espinoza presents an awkward, grueling test for anyone stepping up in weight. His height, wingspan, and relentless motor demand total focus. While Inoue possesses the timing and precision to exploit defensive holes, getting inside on Espinoza means walking through fire against a much bigger fighter.

Espinoza feels fully equipped to take the victory, even if he avoids bold knockout predictions.

“I have the qualities, the desire, and I have the reach, the height. I think I have power,” Espinoza said. “I’m not saying I’m going to knock him out. I’ve never liked talking that way, but I have a lot of hope that I can win that fight.”

Under the guidance of trainer Eddy Reynoso, Espinoza has spent recent camps dialing in his fundamentals. Rather than crowding opponents and absorbing needless shots, he has been drilling range control, leaning hard into straight punches from the outside.

The risk-to-reward ratio is completely tilted against Espinoza. Inoue gets credit for daring to be great no matter who he faces, but taking on a tall physical anomaly in his first outing at 126 offers minimal extra reward compared to the extreme stylistic danger.

Instead of Espinoza getting rewarded for ruling the division, Top Rank and Inoue’s team have plenty of reason to look elsewhere. Whether that means targeting a more conventionally sized titlist like Leo Angelo or Bruce Carrington, or grabbing the newly stripped WBA belt against an opponent with fewer stylistic advantages, Espinoza could find out the hard way that being the most dangerous man in the room often leaves you standing alone.
