Stamford Bridge hosts one of the most intriguing fixtures of the Premier League weekend on Saturday lunchtime as Chelsea welcome a struggling Manchester United side to West London.
Neither team arrives in particularly good spirits. Chelsea’s momentum has evaporated after consecutive defeats, while Manchester United’s season threatens to unravel completely as pressure continues to mount on Michael Carrick.
Verdict: Home win

Despite sitting sixth in the table and comfortably above their opponents, Chelsea’s recent form has raised fresh concerns.
Xabi Alonso’s side appeared to have turned a corner when they demolished Bournemouth and defeated Everton, but setbacks against Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool have exposed familiar weaknesses. A 2-0 defeat to Spurs ended their impressive derby record, before elimination from the EFL Cup at Anfield added further frustration.
The biggest issue remains defensive. Chelsea have already conceded 15 league goals this season, the worst defensive record among the current top-half sides. While their attacking talent remains unquestionable, defensive lapses continue to undermine promising performances.
There is at least good news in attack. Cole Palmer returns after suspension and should immediately improve Chelsea’s creativity. Alongside Morgan Rogers and potentially Joao Pedro if fit enough to feature, the Blues possess more than enough firepower to trouble a vulnerable United defence.
However, injuries continue to be a concern. Maxence Lacroix is expected to miss out after suffering a hamstring problem, joining Reece James, Emiliano Martinez and Jamie Gittens on the sidelines.
Manchester United’s problems extend far beyond results.
The Red Devils travel south sitting 16th in the Premier League table after collecting just seven points from their opening eight matches, representing their worst start to a league season in decades.
Last weekend’s humiliating 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth extended United’s winless run in all competitions to eight matches and intensified scrutiny on Michael Carrick. While the manager appears set to retain the backing of the hierarchy for now, performances and results must improve quickly.
United’s away form is particularly alarming. They are still searching for their first away victory of the season and have struggled to impose themselves in nearly every difficult environment they have visited.
A potential positive is the likely return of Bruno Fernandes after his surprise omission against Bournemouth. Carrick has stressed that the Portuguese playmaker remains committed to the club, and his creativity could be vital if United are to end their miserable run.
Kobbie Mainoo is also back in training, though Luke Shaw, Manuel Ugarte, Benjamin Sesko and Patrick Dorgu remain unavailable.
Neither side can claim to be in convincing form, but Chelsea still appear significantly better equipped to recover from their recent setbacks.
Manchester United’s confidence looks fragile, and their defensive record suggests they could struggle to contain Chelsea’s attacking players, especially with Palmer returning to the side. While the visitors should create chances against a weakened Chelsea defence, they have given little indication recently that they can sustain a high-level performance for 90 minutes.
Expect Manchester United to show more fight than in recent weeks, but Chelsea’s superior attacking quality should ultimately prove decisive.
