Pakistan and England produced a fiercely contested encounter in the ODI tri-series at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday, with the hosts eventually securing a dramatic one-wicket victory. While Shadab Khan’s maiden ODI century dominated the match narrative, a heated exchange between Pakistan fast bowler Haris Rauf and England all-rounder Will Jacks also attracted attention during the tense closing stages of the chase. Pakistan’s victory marked their third consecutive win in the competition and confirmed their place in the final.

Haris Rauf confronts Will Jacks during tense chase

The confrontation unfolded during the 46th over of Pakistan’s innings, when the home side was edging closer to an unlikely victory against England. Shadab was batting on 99 when Sam Curran delivered a short-pitched ball to the Pakistan all-rounder, who appealed for a wide.

As attention shifted towards the exchange surrounding the delivery, Rauf, stationed at the non-striker’s end, became involved in a verbal argument with Jacks. The disagreement quickly intensified, creating a tense moment during an already closely fought contest.

Rauf was subsequently seen moving aggressively towards the England player while holding his bat. The situation threatened to escalate further, prompting the on-field umpire to intervene and separate the players. England batter Joe Root also stepped in to calm matters down. The experienced cricketer helped defuse the confrontation and escorted Rauf away from Jacks, preventing the exchange from developing into a more serious incident.

The episode took place at a crucial stage of Pakistan’s pursuit, with the hosts desperately trying to complete their chase after losing wickets in quick succession. The match ultimately ended in Pakistan’s favour, adding further significance to the dramatic scenes during the closing overs.

Here’s the video:

Shadab Khan’s maiden century power’s Pakistan’s thrilling win

Earlier in the contest, England had been bowled out for 241 after being asked to bat first, leaving Pakistan with a target of 242 runs. Although the total appeared manageable, England’s bowlers made the chase extremely difficult by regularly breaking through the Pakistan batting order.

The hosts found themselves in serious trouble at 154/9, with England seemingly on course to secure an important victory in the tri-series, which also features Sri Lanka. However, Shadab refused to surrender. The all-rounder produced a remarkable innings under pressure, remaining unbeaten on 113 off 96 deliveries to keep Pakistan’s hopes alive.

His maiden ODI century proved decisive, as he absorbed the pressure and continued fighting despite the collapse around him. With the required runs becoming increasingly difficult to secure, Shadab found crucial support from Rauf at the other end.
Rauf played an important supporting role in the closing stages, scoring an unbeaten seven runs while building an invaluable last-wicket partnership with Shadab. The pair added 89 runs for the final wicket, turning a seemingly lost cause into a memorable victory for the hosts. Rauf eventually struck the winning boundary, with Pakistan reaching their target with 17 balls remaining.

The defeat was another setback for Harry Brook’s England, who suffered their third loss in five days in the competition. England had also failed to defend a 430-run target against Sri Lanka earlier in the series.
