Sami Zayn is heading to WWE Crown Jewel as the Undisputed WWE Champion after he survived Trick Williams on the October 30 episode of SmackDown, using some controversial tactics.
The victory also officially set up a huge champion vs. champion match between Zayn and Roman Reigns at Crown Jewel.
This week’s SmackDown saw Zayn defend his Undisputed WWE Championship against Williams. The challenger had Lil Yachty in his corner, while Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae accompanied Sami Zayn.
Trick Williams started strong, hitting the champion with a series of strikes and sending him crashing to the mat. However, Zayn slowly took control.
Williams eventually fought back with clotheslines. He came close to winning with a Bookend and later hit his finishing move, but Zayn kicked out.
The match ended in chaos when Gargano distracted the referee, allowing LeRae to slide the championship belt into the ring. Williams tried to take advantage, but Gargano pulled the referee out of the ring before he could complete the three-count.
Referee Charles Robinson then called for the bell and awarded Williams the victory by disqualification. However, since a championship cannot change hands through a disqualification, Zayn remained champion.
Just then, SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis stepped in to settle the situation. He banned everyone from ringside and ordered the match to restart under No Disqualification rules.
The restarted match saw both wrestlers become even more aggressive. Both stars used the kendo stick to hit each other. Williams hit his signature moves, but Zayn kept finding ways to stay in the fight.
Williams eventually brought steel chairs into the match. Zayn hit a Blue Thunder Bomb onto the chairs, but Williams somehow kicked out just before the three-count.
The challenger looked close to becoming the new champion after hitting a Trick Shot. However, Zayn once again managed to get his shoulder up before Robinson could count to three.
With the title within reach, the US Champion tried to use the championship belt as a weapon. Zayn responded by pulling Robinson in front of him and using him as a human shield. Robinson then got rid of Zayn’s hold, and as he was distracted, the champion hit Williams with a low blow and hit him with the WWE Championship belt to get the three-count.
Zayn once again survived a match to retain his championship.
The self-proclaimed “last real good guy” will now officially face Roman Reigns at Crown Jewel on November 7.
