San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama is still only 22 years old, but he is already one of the NBA’s biggest names. In an era when athletes promote a wide range of brands, Wembanyama leverages his celebrity to shine a light on pressing issues.
When Wembanyama discussed his opinion on a tricky issue affecting the league, social media split into two camps over his stance.
In an interview with “60 Minutes,” Wembanyama was asked about his impressions of the league. The 7-foot-4 center said the NBA allows you to be anyone you want, whether positive or negative.
“You can choose to be the guy that’s gonna promote gambling and alcohol… I want to promote healthy things. I don’t mean just the food but healthy habits, things that make people’s lives better,” Wembanyama said.
Wembanyama previously said that it’s “very sad to see some players promote” sports betting, so this seems to be something he feels strongly about. People flocked to social media to discuss his thoughts.
“Wemby has been elevated by this interview. He presents himself as mature, humble, independent and having a burning desire to win,” one user tweeted.
The NBA has active partnerships with betting companies. Moreover, this year, the league named Kalshi and Polymarket as its “preferred prediction market exchanges.”
Some players have also signed endorsement deals with these companies, including LeBron James at Polymarket and Giannis Antetokounmpo at Kalshi. Several users lauded Wembanyama for what they believe is a principled stance.
“Say what u want about his game he really is a class act in the face of the media. like. impressively so for a 22-year-old,” a user wrote.
Wembanyama made his thoughts on the matter clear and did not dismiss those who endorse alcohol or gambling. He is just draws a line in the sand for himself. However, some NBA fans took issue not with the message but with the messenger.
“Dirtiest player in the league but draws the line at gambling,” another X user wrote.
During the 2026 NBA playoffs, Wembanyama earned a reputation for slinging an errant elbow or attempting to muscle players.
The Spurs center, while leading his team to a Finals appearance, found himself involved in numerous physical incidents. For example, Wembanyama elbowed Minnesota Timberwolves center Naz Reid. The foul led to an ejection and a Flagrant 2 foul assessment.
Yet, it was physical play against New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson that caught the most attention, possibly cementing Wembanyama’s perceived status as a dirty player in some fans’ eyes.
“Elbows people on the head and dives at ACLs but draws the line on alcohol,” a user opined.
Long before the elbow to Reid, murmurs of the superstar’s aggressive play surfaced; watching a 7-foot-4 player who’s averaging a double-double, making a third of his three-point attempts, and leading the NBA in blocks overshadowed the bubbling criticism.
While opinions about the superstar’s stance seem mostly split, some believe there is an ulterior motive.
“He wants to be the face of the league so bad,” one X user mentioned.
As James looks to wind down his career, there could be a power vacuum regarding who takes over as the league’s face from a marketing perspective.
Whether viewed as a principled stance or as contradictory given his flagrant, foul-ridden on-court behavior, Wembanyama’s comments sparked a broader conversation about the kinds of products and habits that NBA stars choose to promote. Right now, fans remain divided on what Wembanyama says and how he plays between the lines.
