RB Leipzig star Christopher Nkunku has made his thoughts known regarding where he sees his future beyond this season.
After being cast aside by new head coach Ruben Amorim in the summer, Nkunku chose to return to Leipzig. He is back to the levels he displayed between 2019 and 2023, when he established himself as one of the brightest talents in the Bundesliga and European football.
He showed this most recently in Leipzig’s demolition job of Eintracht Frankfurt as scored a hat-trick in just 38 minutes, while his overall tally stands at six goal contributions (four of them goals) in eight games across all competitions.
Nkunku is on loan with an option to buy, but he has clear ideas about the future. In a lengthy interview with SportBild, he made it clear that he wants to stay in Germany, seeing his time in Italy as being over.
“I’m very happy in Leipzig. I know the city and the club, and I’m comfortable with everything and everyone. It’s a special place for me. I’ve experienced some very significant moments in my career and my life here,” he said (via calciomercato.com).
“I’ve had four wonderful years, the fans love me, and the atmosphere is family-like. All of this means a lot to me. It’s only the start of the season… if it were up to me, I’d stay a long time. But in a situation like this, the two clubs need to reach an agreement. It’s not just up to me.”
With form like this, the possibility of reclaiming a spot in the French national team under the new manager Zinedine Zidane might also become possible.
“Zidane is a legend, the greatest player France has ever had. Everyone adores him. When I was little, he was one of my role models; I remember the 2006 World Cup very well. I want to return to the national team, there’s no doubt about it.”
