LeBron James brushed off criticism from Donald Trump after the president accused the Philadelphia 76ers star of disrespecting the United States during the national anthem and demanded an apology.

The controversy began Tuesday when James appeared to make golf swings and basketball-shooting motions while standing alongside his teammates during the anthem ahead of the season opener against the New York Knicks.

LeBron James Makes Light of Donald Trump’s Demand for Apology

Trump criticized James in a Truth Social post Thursday, hours before the 76ers overcame a 29-point deficit to defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers 114-106 in their home opener.

“While listening to our National Anthem, LeBron James disrespects our country! I said right from the beginning that he’s no good, a TOTAL DISGRACE,” Trump posted, sharing a video of James during Tuesday’s anthem.

The president also demanded an apology from the 22-time All-Star.

“LeBron James should apologize to all of those great American warriors and heroes who died for the American flag, and all that our country stands for!”

James brushed off the criticism when reporters asked him about Trump’s remarks after the victory.

“Yeah, yeah, must be a slow news day at the office, you know. Slow news day in the office,” James said.

Trump returned to the incident that night while speaking at a campaign rally in Iowa.

“During the national anthem, he’s practicing his golf swing. I said, ‘What the hell is that?’ It’s a big scandal kind of a story. What’s it all about? I don’t understand it,” he said.

Philadelphia improved to 2-0 with the comeback, having opened the season with a 106-100 victory over New York. James recorded 17 points and 10 rebounds against Cleveland and is averaging 15.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 2.0 steals through two games.

Tyrese Maxey led the 76ers with 32 points against the Cavaliers, while Joel Embiid added 24 and Jaylen Brown scored 21. Philadelphia used a 15-0 fourth-quarter run to erase Cleveland’s lead, with Embiid scoring seven straight points to put the 76ers ahead 96-95.

James and Trump have publicly disagreed before, including a dispute involving Stephen Curry and a potential White House visit in September 2017.

After Curry said he would decline an invitation following the Golden State Warriors’ NBA championship, Trump responded on social media.

“Going to the White House is considered a great honor for a championship team. Stephen Curry is hesitating, therefore invitation is withdrawn!”

James then defended Curry in a post directed at Trump.

“Stephen Curry already said he ain’t going! So therefore ain’t no invite. Going to White House was a great honor until you showed up!”

The 76ers next host the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday and the Detroit Pistons on Sunday, with both games scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
