Ally McCoist says he would hate to see Martin O’Neill overstay his time at Celtic, while insisting the manager has earned the respect to decide how long he continues.
The former Rangers striker and manager expressed his personal concern for O’Neill amid growing scrutiny of Celtic’s performances.
Martin O’Neill is under growing pressure, having overseen a disastrous run that’s seen Celtic pick up just three wins in their last ten games.
But, McCoist made clear that his desire to see Rangers succeed does not diminish his regard for the Celtic boss.
“I think Martin has absolutely earned the right and deserves the respect to stay for as long as he feels right. I really do. I would hate Martin to overstay his time at Celtic, first and foremost for his health.
“That’s the most important thing, because I’ve always gotten on really well with Martin. Obviously I want Rangers to win the league 100%, but Martin has more than earned the right to see things out for as long as he wants at Celtic, and that should be the case.” [TalkSPORT Bet]
The comments have emerged as Celtic digest another damaging result. Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Falkirk made it six losses in 10 matches, adding to the pressure on O’Neill and his coaching team, who also picked up one draw at home to Dundee United in that run.
That run has made the discussion about his future increasingly uncomfortable.
O’Neill returned twice last season and helped Celtic secure a league and Scottish Cup double. His contribution to that recovery deserves recognition, just as his achievements during his first spell remain a huge part of the club’s modern history.
But affection for the manager cannot resolve the problems with the current team. Celtic need a more convincing level of performance, and supporters are entitled to question why it has been so difficult to find.
O’Neill signed a one-year contract with a further year’s option in June. His current role carries responsibility for this season, alongside the credit he earned for rescuing the previous one.
McCoist wants him treated with respect. Celtic supporters can share that wish while still expecting the club to make decisions based on what the team needs now.
