Dak Prescott’s Dallas Cowboys and Justin Herbert’s Los Angeles Chargers started the season with playoff aspirations, but neither team has lived up to expectations. The less said about the 0-6 Chargers, the better, whereas the Cowboys have Cowboy-ed at 2-4.
With both teams facing challenges, speculation is growing about whether a big roster move could help change their struggles. Former NFL MVP Boomer Esiason proposed a blockbuster trade scenario that he believes could serve as a fresh start for the two franchise quarterbacks, but fans were clearly not on board with the idea.
Prescott has completed 163 of 246 passes for 1,639 yards, 10 touchdowns, and five interceptions through six games. He ranks No. 14 in PFN QB Impact with a 77.9 grade.
Prescott has struggled with turnovers in the last few games, throwing two interceptions against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 5 before recording another pair in Dallas’ Week 6 loss to the Green Bay Packers.
Though Prescott’s overall performance isn’t the reason Dallas has been losing, Esiason said a Herbert-for-Prescott trade would be good for the NFL.
“Could you see Justin Herbert wearing a Dallas Cowboys uniform? Let’s just fantasize about that for a second,” Esiason said on his “Kickoff with Boomer and Valenti Show.”
“Justin Herbert goes to the Cowboys, and Dak Prescott goes to the Chargers, that would be amazing. That would be great for the NFL, great for football. Now, both of these guys probably have no-trade clauses in their contracts. But maybe both of the guys are sick and tired of where they are by the time we get to the end of the season. I think that would be a dream scenario for all of us who cover the NFL.”
It really didn’t take all that long for fans to outline how far-fetched the idea was.
“Come on, man. Boomer tripping,” veteran Cowboys insider Clarence Hill Jr. wrote.
“Wouldn’t be good at all for the Cowboys lmao,” the Stargazer Sports page remarked.
“You mean that would be great for the Chargers. And you guys. How does Dallas win in that scenario?” one fan asked.
Herbert has thrown for 1,141 yards, five touchdowns, and eight interceptions through six games. His 60.4 PFN QB Impact Score ranks bottom of the league. Yikes.
As Herbert’s situation in Los Angeles is arguably even more concerning, fans think the discussion is baseless.
“Why would Dallas want to actively get worse at the most important position in the sport?” one fan exclaimed.
“Good for what exactly? Dak has been top 10 every year. He’s the least of the issues in Dallas. So [expletive] would the point of the trade be? Herbert has been [expletive],” one fan remarked.
However, Herbert’s disappointing performance this season does not erase his previous accomplishments. He proved his ability to produce at a high level last season, throwing for 3,727 yards and 26 touchdowns against 13 interceptions while completing 66.4% of his passes.
That evidence of production serves as a reminder of Herbert’s mettle. A lot has gone wrong in the Chargers’ building this season, but not all those issues boil down to Herbert’s lackluster play.
