Everything we learned from Texas A&M's 31-20 road loss to Alabama

Texas A&M suffered its fourth loss in SEC play against No. 13 Alabama on Saturday afternoon, falling 31-20 in a fourth-quarter game decided when the Aggies led 20-17 and had a chance to take a two-score lead and put more pressure on Alabama QB Keelon Russell.

Failing to convert on third and short, starting quarterback Marcel Reed, who had played well up until then, botched an unnecessary handoff under center, according to coach Mike Elko. These decisions always fall on the head coach, as the turnover on downs led to two Alabama touchdowns that all but ended the game thanks to the Aggies' poor response on offense in the fourth quarter.

Texas A&M's defense held up for most of the game and deserves credit for forcing Keelon Russell into tough throws, including senior cornerback Dezz Ricks' interception that allowed the Aggies to tie the game heading into halftime.

Until the fourth quarter, Marcel Reed played his best game of the season, completing 14/21 for 163 yards and one touchdown, along with his first-quarter rushing score. Facing a beat-up Alabama secondary was expected, but Texas A&M produced just 15 yards of offense in the fourth quarter, which again falls on the coaching staff and Marcel Reed's play.

The Aggies now head into the bye week with zero answers after another poor performance against a ranked SEC opponent. Here are five key takeaways from Saturday's 31-20 loss.

Mike Elko is now 0-5 against ranked opponents after signing his extension

The post-game focus on Texas A&M's fourth-down call largely cleared up after Mike Elko said "there was no play" after center Mark Nabou snapped the ball, pointing to a communication issue between Marcel Reed and Nabou.

However, Elko's odd decision to punt on fourth-and-six when the Aggies trailed 31-20 should still be questioned, as the third-year head coach said he didn't think Marcel Reed was playing well enough to move the chains and trusted his defense to get the ball back.

Texas A&M is now 0-5 against AP Top 25 teams after Mike Elko signed his massive extension late last season, and with the bye week approaching and zero momentum, the Aggie fan base's trust in Elko continues to dwindle after another poor second-half finish.

Despite his first-half play, QB Marcel Reed should not be Texas A&M's starter in 2027

After his first-half performance, Marcel Reed gave the Aggies a chance to win an SEC road game, completing nine passes for a touchdown and rushing for a score, but, as in nearly every game this season, Texas A&M's offense completely shut down, producing just 15 total yards in the fourth quarter.

Blaming the play calling and Mike Elko's decision-making is deserved, but Marcel Reed continues to show why he can't be trusted to lead an offense in tight games, an issue that came to light late in the 2025 season after losses to Texas and Miami in the first round of the College Football Playoff.

OC Holmon Wiggins' early play-calling, focused on up-tempo passing concepts, including several successful slant routes, should have been the focus late in the game, but Marcel Reed wasn't up to the task, and the offensive line also broke down late.

I doubt Mike Elko will bench Marcel Reed, knowing the season is lost, but in the coming weeks the focus should be finding a transfer portal replacement and playing backup Brady Hart more.

First-year OC Holmon Wiggins called an above-average first half and parts of the second before things spiraled out of control, while first-year DC Lyle Hemphill couldn't fully contain QB Keelon Russell, especially on play-action looks that left wide receivers streaking downfield uncovered.

For Wiggins, working with a high-variance QB like Marcel Reed doesn't make the job any easier, and Hemphill's inexperience against SEC offenses came to roost Saturday afternoon when the defense needed stops in the fourth quarter.

For smaller programs without the funds to hire experienced outside options, elevating first-year playcallers makes sense, but if the season keeps spiraling, this risky offseason decision will haunt Mike Elko as the offseason nears.

Texas A&M's running back duo serves as the lone bright spot

Freshman running back KJ Edwards led the Aggies' rushing attack with eight carries for 43 yards, averaging 5.4 yards per carry. Over the last three quarters, Edwards received just three carries, which was explained by Mike Elko after the game:

"Yeah, he got banged up. He was trying to fight through it. We got him back a little bit in the second half, but he had a deep contusion."

Sophomore back Jamarion Morrow had an impressive effort, totaling 22 rushing yards and 33 receiving yards and providing much-needed physicality at the line of scrimmage. Texas A&M's future running back rotation will be led by Edwards and Morrow, who have all the necessary traits.

While Alabama did a good job stopping the run after the first half, if Mike Elko starts Marcel Reed for the rest of the season, the offense needs to focus on the run, especially for development.

Texas A&M is heading towards a 4-8 finish

It's hard to see where the Aggies get their next win, given that, after the bye week, they still face South Carolina on the road, Tennessee at home, Oklahoma in Norman, and Texas at home before the season ends. Right now, if Texas A&M's offense plays as it did in the first half for the rest of the season, at least two more wins are in the cards, but that's a long shot.

Even after defeating The Citadel 41-0 in Week 7, failing to hold a 20-17 lead on the road in SEC play is just another example that Texas A&M is a bad football team with zero expectations, which should result in better play on offense given the lack of pressure, but after today, things could get uglier down the stretch.

After South Carolina's comeback win over Tennessee, the Gamecocks will be a tough out, while Oklahoma plays well at home, and Texas is currently playing up to its standard against Ole Miss.
