Get ready for another week of agonising over the sorry state of Manchester United. The legends of old will rage, clips of a fuming Gary Neville will fly around social media, the airwaves will reverberate with complaints from angry supporters and by the time United play again there is every chance a new manager will be in the dugout.

There were echoes of Erik ten Hag’s final game in charge as the walls closed in on Michael Carrick at Stamford Bridge. United missed a series of golden chances when the scores were level, just as they did when Ten Hag lost to West Ham a day before his sacking two years ago, and Chelsea made the most of the reprieve after initially delivering a performance so bad it had you worrying for the nascent Xabi Alonso project.

I am at the big one.

Amid a hectic day in the Premier League, I find myself sat at the AIG Stadium, the home of League Two leaders Salford City. There is not a cloud in the sky and it is unseasonably warm in Greater Manchester where the Ammies are aiming to secure an eighth straight league win. David Beckham and Gary Neville are part of the ownership and there is plenty of ambition to move up the leagues, despite having the fourth-lowest average attendance.

Former Ange Postecoglou assistant Peter Cklamovski is in charge of Salford and is redefining their style. They suffered a bumpy start, losing their first three games but they have found their way under the Australian coach and few would back against them winning the league come May.

A rare treat with five 3pm kick-offs in the Premier League this afternoon. There’s a Carabao Cup rematch at the Etihad as Brighton aim to get revenge for their defeat on penalties on Wednesday night. Bournemouth look to continue their good form against a resolute Leeds side, Brentford v Forest should be entertaining, there’s a basement battle between Coventry and Sunderland, while two promoted sides go at it with Ipswich on the road at Hull. In the Championship West Ham v West Brom will be worth keeping an eye on, my pick for League One is Mansfield v Notts County, and League Two leaders Salford welcome in-form Exeter to Moor Lane. I’ll be doing my best to keep you across all of it and first up is the team news, in about 15 minutes.
