Cristiano Ronaldo handed 30-day suspension by Portugal after training camp exit

Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension by the Portuguese FA after leaving the national team camp following a reported dispute with coach Jorge Jesus. The 41-year-old was also fined 255 euros but remains available for selection after his ban.

Cristiano Ronaldo, FIFA World Cup 2026

Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after being found guilty of leaving the national team camp following a disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus over his role in the side.

The federation's disciplinary council confirmed on Monday that it had upheld the charge against the 41-year-old forward in full. Ronaldo was also fined 255 euros ($285.83) for the incident, which occurred ahead of Portugal's Nations League fixture against Denmark earlier this month.

The suspension follows a reported fallout between Ronaldo and Jesus, with the former claiming that the coach had twice gone back on his word regarding his role in the team. The disagreement came after Ronaldo was left as an unused substitute in Portugal's match against Norway.

Ronaldo subsequently left Portugal's base in Copenhagen before the match against Denmark, prompting disciplinary proceedings. The federation opened the case on October 9 over events that had reportedly taken place two days earlier.

DISPUTE WITH JESUS

The incident centred on Ronaldo's frustration over his involvement with the national team. The veteran forward had reportedly accused Jesus of breaking an understanding regarding his role, leading to tensions between the two.

Jesus, however, denied that he had made any agreement with Ronaldo. Despite the disagreement, the coach left the door open for the forward's return after Portugal secured a 2-1 victory.

The disciplinary council's non-professional section ruled that Ronaldo had intentionally committed an offence under Article 160(1) of the federation's disciplinary regulations. The ruling confirmed that the charge had been upheld in its entirety.

However, the federation's statement did not clarify which matches or national team activities would be affected by the 30-day suspension. It also did not specify whether any time Ronaldo had already served under a provisional suspension would be deducted from the final punishment.

The lack of clarity leaves questions over the practical implications of the sanction and how it could affect Ronaldo's availability for Portugal in the immediate future.

RONALDO APOLOGISES

Ronaldo later apologised for his conduct following the Norway match, acknowledging that he had failed to recognise the supporters and had left his teammates behind when he departed the camp.

The forward also reiterated his willingness to represent Portugal, making it clear that he remained available for selection after serving any punishment arising from the incident.

His apology could prove important as Portugal look to move beyond the controversy and maintain stability within the squad. Ronaldo remains one of the country's most prominent players, and his relationship with the coaching staff will continue to attract attention as the team prepares for its upcoming assignments.

The incident has also raised questions about the management of senior players and their expectations regarding playing time, particularly when a team is balancing individual ambitions with collective objectives.

PORTUGAL OPEN TO HIS RETURN

Portuguese FA president Pedro Proenca has previously indicated that there was a desire within the federation to see Ronaldo return to the national team once the matter had been resolved.

That position suggests the disciplinary action may not necessarily signal a permanent breakdown in the relationship between Ronaldo and Portugal. The federation's immediate priority will be to ensure that the matter is settled and that the team can focus on its sporting commitments.

For Ronaldo, the challenge will be to put the episode behind him and re-establish his place in the national setup after the suspension. His public apology and stated willingness to return indicate that he has not closed the door on his international career.

Nevertheless, uncertainty remains over the exact scope of the punishment and when he will next be eligible to represent Portugal. Until the federation clarifies how the suspension will be applied, the impact on his availability will remain unclear.

The episode marks another disciplinary setback for the experienced forward, whose influence on Portugal extends beyond his performances on the pitch. With the federation expressing its desire for his return, attention will now turn to whether Ronaldo and the national team can move forward from the dispute with Jesus.
