Sports broadcasting legend dead at 59 — Troy Aikman’s heart breaks for ‘right-hand man’

Southwest Florida sports radio personality David Moulton died after a six-year battle with stage four renal cell cancer, his wife, Julie shared on Saturday.

He was 59.

“It is with a completely shattered heart broken into a million pieces I share that my loving husband, David, died last night while in hospice care at the Douglas Center for Caring,” she wrote, per the Fort Myers News-Press. “David battled stage four renal cell cancer for six long years. It metastasized to his bones two years ago. He never stopped fighting or trying new treatments.

“He loved life and loved each and every one of you more than words can express. We are so thankful for the love and support you all have given us.

“My sweet husband you are finally free of pain and with all our heavenly angels. Thank you for blessing us with the gift of you and for sharing your beautiful life with all of us. Cherish every second and he did. Love you.”

David and Julie share a daughter, Melissa.

Kevin Burkhardt, lead play-by-play voice for Fox’s NFL coverage announced Moulton’s passing during the network’s coverage of the Lions-Packers game on Sunday.

“Just a guy that everyone around him loved,” Burkhardt said. “Gone too soon. David Moulton, you will be missed my friend.”

Moulton left the “Miller and Moulton” show with his longtime radio partner, Mark Miller, in August due to his declining health.

He had been working on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” coverage for the last several years with Troy Aikman and Joe Buck.

Moulton previously worked as a spotter for Buck and Aikman for Fox’s NFL coverage on Thursdays and Sundays — and he served the same role for SEC games on CBS with Gary Danielson.

He also worked with Sirius XM on Mad Dog Radio and NFL Radio.

Moulton was the voice of The Florida Gulf Coast athletics and had been a columnist for the Naples Daily News and The News-Press from 2007-2018.

Former colleagues and sports personalities shared their condolences and memories with Moulton across social media.

“Since 2018, David Moulton has been my right-hand man in the broadcast booth,” Aikman wrote in an Instagram post, including a snapshot of the pair in the booth. “What started as a professional relationship became a friendship I have cherished.

“David was loyal, dependable and a warrior until the very end. He deserved better. My heart breaks for his family and all who loved him. I’m grateful for the years we shared and will miss him deeply. Rest in peace big guy🙏🏼❤️

CBS Sports reporter Jenny Dell shared a message from Danielson, who does not have social media.

“Gary Danielson doesn’t have social media, but he asked me to share these words in memory of our dear friend, David Moulton,” Dell wrote on her social media, including a photo of Moulton and Danielson, on Sunday.

“Yesterday [Saturday] was a day I was praying would not happen. David Moulton was my researcher/spotter with our CBS college football crew since 2006!! We first met when I heard him doing a local radio show; became intrigued with his knowledge, decided to cold call him and offered him a job!! He was great and helped make our broadcast better.

“More importantly for me, David grew into being my most trusted friend. During our travels together, we talked sports, but also so much more about life. I will miss him dearly. With deepest sorrow I want to send my condolences and love to Julie, his family and his beloved mother, Kit, who was his biggest supporter. David, you have so many friends that are all hurting today. Love you and will miss our talks, David!! Gary”

CBS Sports NFL sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson reposted Dell’s message from Danielson.

“Thank you for sharing Jenny. David was a great man and great friend and I loved our time together,” Wolfson wrote. “We kept in touch long after I stopped working with the crew. He will be missed by all. Prayers to his family during this difficult time. ❤️”.

Miller, his longtime radio co-host, shared stories of Moulton, who he described as a wonderful person and a sports encyclopedia.

“For 20 years, he and I did Miller and Moulton. The only reason my name was first is because Miller and Moulton sounded better than Moulton and Miller. Make no mistake, he was top billing,” Miller said.

“We spent together Monday – Friday was the most fun you could have ‘working.’ He would always say, ‘It beats working for a living.’ Did it ever! David was a sports encyclopedia. His recall of games, players and events was unlike any person I have ever come across.

“More importantly though, he was a great friend, husband and father. The way he talked about his wife and daughter, let you in on what a wonderful person he was. If you were in his inner circle, there wasn’t anything he would not do for you.

“I miss everything we did together, but mostly the off air stuff, especially the biting sarcasm we shared during commercial breaks. Lastly, we would text one another, along with our long time producer and great friend, John Cassio, when someone famous died. It was just a text with the name and how old they were. David Moulton, 60. Rest easy, my friend.”
