“Blow this whole system apart” – Journalist wants Manchester City drama to end football as it is

Manchester City may have just found themselves a surprising ally in their fight against the Premier League. Well, sort of anyway.

Naturally Manchester City’s ongoing case is the big story at this moment in time and will be for a while yet.

What happens to Manchester City after they were found guilty of all 115 charges last month and accused of arranging ‘sham’ contracts to artificially enhance their finances, remains to be seen.

They are now actively fighting the punishment, with an appeal lodged. Whether that’s the end of their appeals, though, is yet to be determined. It seems unlikely that those in charge, who maintain their innocence, will leave it there.

A part of the Manchester City argument is that the game was rigged against them from the start. They, like others, are very much against the current financial regulations that are currently in place.

What has been said

That’s an argument they may want to pursue. They are certainly not the only ones to believe they are a problem.

One man in their corner would be journalist Stefano Cecchi. He was speaking on the programme Microfono Aperto on Radio Sportiva, when he addressed the Manchester City case directly. He wants to see the current system collapse because of the current situation.

“I’m actually rooting, not out of malice, but for something to happen, starting with Manchester City, that blows this whole system apart,” he said.

“Because if it does collapse… fans, rest assured: if football blows up, if it goes into ‘default,’ to use a popular term, it doesn’t mean the end of Juventus, Fiorentina, Manchester City, or Atalanta.

“They won’t disappear. Who will disappear? All those figures who have profited from football over the years.”

Football clubs will still exist

Manchester City

He is particularly eager for football agents to see their comeuppance. And he insists that the apparent concern that football clubs would simply collapse, is unfounded.

“If Esposito’s agent doesn’t get to build a swimming pool, who cares?” he added.

“If Rabiot’s mother doesn’t buy three Mercedes a year, who cares?”

“Even if the system collapses, it is this, this degeneration, that will disappear. But the clubs themselves will not vanish. Have teams in volleyball or other, less wealthy sports disappeared?

“Do you really think teams just vanish? No, Fiorentina, Juventus, Cagliari, and Sampdoria will remain forever. What will disappear is this entire mass of money that is becoming… toxic.”
