Manchester United to have Eddie Howe Newcastle United compensation fee halved

On Monday it was reported that Eddie Howe is now interested in speaking to Manchester United.

Sky Sports saying that their sources had told them that with Michael Carrick set to be sacked, the former Newcastle United manager is willing to talk to Man U about taking over from Carrick.

Manchester United having won none of their last eight games in all competitions, losing five and drawing three. The latest humiliation on Sunday as Bournemouth dominated at Old Trafford and easily won 3-0.

In total this season, Michael Carrick has won only two of twelve matches in all competitions.

Rob Dorsett of Sky Sports saying that their understanding was that the Man U bosses were already considering who they could replace Carrick with, even before the defeat to Bournemouth amid the club’s worst-ever start to a Premier League season.

The Manchester United have left Michael Carrick in the dark over his future as they first find out who his replacement is going to be.

Julian Nagelsmann is the other widely reported top candidate and he is a free agent after his sacking by Germany in the summer.

Once the Eddie Howe claimed interest was reported, news of compensation swiftly followed. That Manchester United would have to pay Newcastle United if Eddie Howe replaced Michael Carrick.

Eddie Howe having resigned from Newcastle United in July and under the terms of his exit a £6m compensation fee widely reported yesterday.

Now however James Ducker of The Telegraph has given an update on the compensation situation.

Ducker stating: ‘It emerged on Monday that Man U would have to pay compensation to land Eddie Howe under the terms of his exit from Newcastle United in July. While the compensation figure initially stood at about £6m, it is understood the sum is due to reduce to about £3m. The 48-year-old had a number of years left on his contract with Newcastle when he stepped down in July and the Tyneside club factored in a degree of protection in the event that he ended up at a rival in the months that followed.’

Considering the staggering amounts of Man U money that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazers have wasted on recruiting and sacking poor managers, it would be the best £3m (or £6m) they’ve ever spent if recruiting Eddie Howe.

Here’s hoping the brilliant former United manager steers well clear of the mess at Old Trafford and Ratcliffe and the Glazers decide to ‘save’ £3m (or £6m) and go for Nagelsmann or similar once they have sacked Carrick.
