Paolo Scaroni has once again spoken about the importance of AC Milan and Inter’s stadium project, as he has many times in recent years.
This morning, AC Milan president Paolo Scaroni spoke at the ‘Il Tempo dello Sport’ conference, held at Bocconi University in Milan. The central theme of his speech focused on the issue of the new stadium, with statements that come on the eve of a crucial event.
Indeed, Thursday 29 October will mark the official presentation of the project, which will take place tomorrow at 16:30 CET at the Palazzo Visconteo at the Sforza Castle. The design renderings from Foster + Partners and Manica are expected to be published.
After the San Donato saga and the Hippodrome idea, will this finally be the decisive moment? In his speech Scaroni retraced the stages of the debate surrounding the demolition and reconstruction of the city stadium, underlining the evolution of collective thinking. MilanVibes relayed his comments.
“I dedicated six years of my life to promoting the new San Siro stadium. It was a long and difficult process. When in 2018 I tried to explain that Milan absolutely needed a new stadium and that the San Siro stadium couldn’t be renovated, I encountered a lot of resistance,” he said.
“You can’t even think about renovating a stadium where two clubs alternate playing every three days in front of 70,000 spectators. How could a project of this magnitude ever be carried out with this constant influx of people?
“To all my explanations, the answer was that San Siro represents the Scala of football, recalling the affection of those who went there as children with their grandfathers. There was a strong emotional and nostalgic component. But perhaps, precisely because of such an intimate and almost familial bond, the time had come to turn the page and introduce something new.”
“This transformation process has gradually spread to both the Milanese public and the political class, which has gradually aligned itself with our vision. This culminated in the turning point last November, when AC Milan and Inter officially took over San Siro.”
