Wrexham fans face road closures after Sheffield United game

The Reds face Sheffield United at Bramall Lane tonight (Friday, October 30), with kick-off at 8pm.

For supporters driving from Wrexham, a number of routes are available across the Pennines, but planned overnight works mean the journey home could differ significantly depending on which route is chosen.

One of the most important closures affects the M67, which forms part of a route towards Sheffield via Manchester, Mottram and the Woodhead Pass.

Both the eastbound M67 between junctions three and four and the westbound carriageway between junctions four and three are scheduled to close from 8pm tonight until 6am on Saturday.

The closures are for improvement works between Hyde and Glossop, meaning the westbound restriction could be particularly relevant to supporters returning towards Manchester after the game.

Further restrictions are planned on the M60.

The anti-clockwise carriageway between junctions three and one is due to close from 9pm until 6am for horticultural work, with associated slip road closures.

A separate clockwise entry slip road closure is planned at junction six, while the link from the clockwise M60 at junction 18 to the northbound M66 is also scheduled to close from 9pm.

There are also works on the M56, although the main full closure is eastbound.

The eastbound M56 between junctions nine and seven is scheduled to shut from 10pm until 6am.

The M56 westbound link to the northbound M53 is also due to close from 8pm until 6am, while the eastbound link to the anti-clockwise M60 closes from 9pm.

Supporters who prefer to cross the Pennines rather than use the motorway routes also have options.

The A628 Woodhead Pass was open when checked this morning, with no incidents reported and no planned closures listed for the following seven days.

The A57 Snake Pass is another option for supporters travelling between Sheffield and the Manchester side of the Pennines.

The route itself is open, with no full closure scheduled tonight.

Roadworks are listed further along the A57, but these are between the A6013 at the Ladybower Reservoir/Ashopton turn-off and the start of the Snake Road mountain-pass section, rather than a closure of Snake Pass itself.

Supporters who prefer not to use Snake Pass after dark may therefore wish to consider Woodhead or another alternative route, although motorists should check live traffic conditions before setting off and again after the match.

Rail passengers are also being advised to check their journeys carefully.

National Rail says passengers can use its Journey Planner for full journeys and Live Trains for real-time information on individual services.

There is disruption affecting Northern services across its network until the end of Saturday, October 31, according to current disruption information, making a live check particularly important for anyone using Northern as part of their journey.

With the game not kicking off until 8pm, supporters relying on trains should pay particular attention to their planned connections after the match rather than assuming the same options will remain available late in the evening.

Fans driving should similarly check their chosen route home before leaving Sheffield, with several of tonight's motorway closures scheduled to be in place by the time the match finishes.
