Eagles will need another NFL draft-driven reset to escape cap trouble

The Eagles’ most realistic path through their growing salary-cap obligations won't start with another round of restructures. It begins with the NFL draft.

Philadelphia has more than $82 million in existing 2026 dead money and could carry at least $41.1 million into 2027 if its players with expiring contracts depart, according to figures cited by Sports Illustrated. Lane Johnson’s retirement will add substantial charges, while future decisions involving Landon Dickerson, Saquon Barkley and potentially Jalen Hurts could increase the total. The Eagles have managed similar circumstances before. After absorbing the Carson Wentz trade and its record dead-money charge, Philadelphia leaned on a younger roster built around Hurts, DeVonta Smith, Dickerson, Jordan Mailata and other affordable contributors. Once the books stabilized, Howie Roseman added A.J. Brown, Haason Reddick and C.J. Gardner-Johnson to a team that reached the Super Bowl.

The next transition will require the same discipline.

Philadelphia can continue restructuring core contracts and using post-June 1 designations, but those mechanisms only move charges into later seasons. They do not create additional value. Productive players on rookie contracts provide the genuine savings required to carry expensive veterans and dead money simultaneously.

That places more pressure on the draft capital acquired in the Cam Jurgens trade. The Eagles must find immediate help on the offensive line, where Johnson has retired, and Dickerson’s durability has become a concern. The tight end, edge rusher, and secondary also project as significant needs. Jalen Carter, Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt give Philadelphia a young defensive foundation. The Eagles now need a comparable group to emerge on offense.

Roseman’s cap strategy has never depended solely on accounting. It works when Philadelphia extends the right core players, spends aggressively around them, and continually replaces departed veterans with inexpensive talent.

The Eagles do not need a complete teardown. They need another strong draft cycle—and far fewer mistakes—while their deferred cap charges move through the books.
