Manchester United have been offered the chance to rekindle their interest in Inter superstar Federico Dimarco.

The Red Devils are in desperate need of left-back reinforcements after deciding to keep their powder dry in the summer. Lewis Hall was targeted, but Newcastle refused to sell and ended up handing him a new contract, which could also make him unattainable in 2027.

Approaches for Rayan Ait-Nouri at Man City and Alejandro Balde at Barcelona yielded no results either. Both are once again being linked with Man Utd ahead of January, as is RB Leipzig captain David Raum, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Club Brugge sensation Joaquin Seys is another exciting target, but he seems to have already ruled out a January transfer. He insists that he is fully focused on continuing to tear up the Champions League with his in-form side.

All the way back in March, FootballTransfers exclusively revealed that Inter wing-back Dimarco had emerged on the Old Trafford club's radar. We noted that a summer move would be difficult to pull off due to the Nerazzurri's reluctance to lose such a key player, and so it proved.

Dimarco contract talks grind to a halt

Now, however, Man Utd have been offered the chance to reignite their interest in the Italy international. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, his contract discussions with Inter have hit a dead end, leaving his future at the Giuseppe Meazza in doubt.

Already in September, reports in Italy suggested that an agreement with Dimarco was not a foregone conclusion due to his wage demands. In anticipation of tense negotiations, the player switched from Roc Nation to AC Talent, which also represents teammate Aleksandar Stankovic.

That same month, Dimarco addressed his contract situation at the Gran Gala del Calcio and expressed his surprise at the club's sluggishness in opening talks over a new deal. Inter's view was that there was no rush as they still had a one-year extension option until 2028.

That clause has now been exercised, but it hasn't resolved the 28-year-old's awkward contract situation. Dimarco would prefer to continue at his boyhood club, but only at the right price. He is currently believed to earn €5.2 million and wants his salary to be bumped up to €7.5m.

Inter, however, have no intention of paying a player who turns 30 next year such a hefty wage. The Milan club plan to trim down their wage bill with heavily incentivised contracts for older stars.

Dimarco believes that he earned his raise after playing the best season of his career in 2025/26, but he hasn't helped his case in recent months. His performance levels have dropped, while competitor Carlos Augusto has enjoyed a market improvement.

For now, Inter remain calm despite the breakdown in discussions. They believe that Dimarco's loyalty to the club is unshakeable and are confident that no suitors would be willing to offer him his desired salary.

But is that really the case? For a club like Man Utd, €7.5m would be a fairly affordable pay package for a player of Dimarco's quality. By contrast, Luke Shaw is believed to earn more than €9m annually.

If Capology is to be believed, Dimarco would be Man Utd's 17th highest-paid player with a salary of €7.5m. Of course, a fee would be required to sign him prior to 2028, and this is perhaps the biggest stumbling block.

Inter surely won't entertain a January sale of a key player like Dimarco, so he would only be a summer reinforcement. At that point, there may be more attractive options available, like the aforementioned Seys or Bournemouth's Adrien Truffert, who are both younger and more traditional left-backs.

Ultimately, it seems a stretch to suggest that Dimarco could end up at Man Utd, but with his long-term future at Inter in doubt and the Old Trafford outfit known to have previously shown interest in him, it is a situation that might nevertheless be worth keeping an eye on.
