Twelve years after scoring a brace on his senior debut for Manchester United, James Wilson finds himself without a club.

Born in Staffordshire, Wilson joined the Red Devils' academy at the age of seven. He rose through the various youth ranks before going on to make 20 appearances for the first team under several different managers.

After being released by the Premier League giants in 2019, following a succession of loan spells in the Football League and in Scotland, the striker signed permanently for Aberdeen before enjoying stints at Salford City, Port Vale and Northampton Town.

However, after failing to impress in his solitary season with the Cobblers, his contract wasn't renewed at the end of the 2024/25 season, and over a year later, he is still a free agent.

An extremely prolific number nine in United's youth teams, Wilson was known by those in the senior set-up from a very young age. David Moyes was carefully monitoring his progress in the under-18s and then the under-21s during the 2013/14 season, and the Scotsman eventually called the youngster up to a matchday squad in the dying embers of his tenure at Old Trafford.

However, it was interim boss Ryan Giggs who gave Wilson his senior debut. In May 2014, the Welshman shocked many by naming the teenager in his starting eleven for the visit of Hull City. Wilson repaid the faith shown in him, scoring twice before being replaced by Robin van Persie in the 64th minute.

Naturally, two debut goals sparked excitement over what the then 18-year-old could become. The following summer, new manager Louis van Gaal opted to sell Danny Welbeck to Arsenal to create space for Wilson in the senior squad. The Dutchman also tipped the prodigy forward to succeed the legendary Wayne Rooney, who was 28 at the time, at Old Trafford, according to the Sun.

Meanwhile, after his electric debut, Giggs waxed lyrical about Wilson, essentially hinting that the player's ceiling had no limits.

"Wilson is a natural goalscorer, but he has got more to his game than that. He can run at people, he has got pace and he is a clever player.” - Ryan Giggs on James Wilson in 2014.

It's possible that the pressure that this hype created got to Wilson. While the 2014/15 season saw the centre-forward play 17 times under Van Gaal, as he continued his gradual development, he netted just twice for the United first team that campaign.

The following season, after finding himself on the periphery of the Manchester club's squad, he left for Brighton on loan in November 2015. This was the first of four temporary spells away from the north-west, including stints at Derby County, Sheffield United and Aberdeen, before he was eventually let go by his boyhood club in the summer of 2019.

James Wilson's Post-Man Utd Career

Wilson did just about enough during his loan at Aberdeen in the 2018/19 campaign to prompt the Dons to offer him a two-year contract.

However, after 16 goalless appearances at the start of the following season, he was sold to League Two side Salford City in January. An uninspiring 18 months at Moor Lane saw Wilson again move on in the 2021 off-season. He joined Port Vale, where he'd go on to enjoy the most productive campaign of his career.

Netting 15 goals across all competitions in his debut season at Vale Park as the Valiants won promotion to League One, Wilson's career prospects were looking up. However, he struggled to replicate his League Two form in the third division, scoring just eight goals combined in the next two seasons.

Vale parted ways with the then 28-year-old, who was offered a lifeline by Northampton Town in the summer of 2024.

Signing a one-year contract with the Shoe Army, he was under pressure to impress, with his future at the club on the line. Scoring no goals in 12 appearances in the 202/25 campaign, Wilson's contract wasn't renewed.

It's now been over 12 months since the once United wonderkid has played professional football. Despite his acumen in League Two, an offer hasn't arrived, or at least hasn't been accepted.

From being tipped to replace Rooney at one of the biggest clubs in world football to being a free agent at 30, Wilson's tale is a stark reminder of football's unpredictability and the fine margins between promise and fulfillment.
