Hibs boss reveals tactical tweak for Celtic clash at Easter Road amid 'make the opponent doubt' promise

Scottish Premiership leaders take on Hibs side sitting bottom of table

Hibs hope to inject some “doubt” into the Celtic ranks by switching up their tactics for Sunday’s bottom-versus-top clash at Easter Road. But Marink Reedijk admits his team’s approach will be influenced by what sort of “flavour” the league leaders add to their mix for a return to domestic competition.

His team sitting at the foot of the Scottish Premiership and seeking their first home league win since April 4, Reedijk knows Hibs needs to improve on their performances in his first two games at the helm, with a defeat away to Dundee United followed by last weekend’s home loss to Falkirk. The Dutchman insists he has a plan to turn things around against the reigning champions.

“So first and foremost we need to be consistent in the things we did well,” said Reedijk, who says he found positives in watching repeated replays of the Falkirk game. “So the things we did well was against the ball, high press, make sure you're on the front foot, pressure on the ball when we're in low press. And this we need to do again.

“On the ball, what we need to improve is that we find the moments and have a variation in our play. Not only to play short but also a variation to sometimes play in behind to make the opponent doubt - and give a challenge to the opponent more than that we just want to play from the back.”

Celtic ‘flavour’ factor plus injury news

Assessing the challenge presented by a Celtic team who battered Hearts last weekend but went down tamely to Europa League opponents Celta Vigo last night, Reedijk said: “Seeing Celtic yesterday and all the matches I've seen before, it is a team who wants to play from the back. It's a team who wants to take some risks, who have really good individual players, want to get the wingers in one-for-one scenarios.

“They have Nygren there as a number 10 who wants to be and likes to be in the box, makes runs in behind. They have several flavours in order to who they put on the pitch so this is what I expect of Celtic.”

Hibs will still be without Nathan Lowe, Callum Wright and Jacob Devaney for Sunday’s game, while Reedijk reported that none of his long-term injured players are expected to return, saying: “No, it's the same squad as last week. Cal and JD are positive. So they look positive at the moment, more positive than we expected, so that's a good sign. They’re not ready for this match.

“With Nathan, we have to see. This is a more complicated injury, so this can be also that in the next few days he's back, but it can also take a little longer.”
