Former England star Chris Waddle was the guest speaker at Berriew’s sportsman’s dinner on Sunday, October 18, with his appearance coinciding neatly with Jones receiving the managerial accolade.
And Jones was not the only Berriew winner to have his award presented by the former Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Marseille and Sheffield Wednesday star, with Lewis Hamer having also been named player of the month.
Jones said: "Chris Waddle was the guest speaker at the club's sportsman's dinner so it was just pure luck that I had received the award and Lewis Hamer for player of the month just before the dinner.
"So the club asked if Waddle would present the awards to us!"
It meant Jones was able to collect his MMP Central Wales League North Manager of the Month award from one of the best-known names of his generation.
Waddle represented England at the 1986 and 1990 World Cups during an illustrious playing career which also took him from Newcastle to Tottenham before a successful spell in France with Marseille.
He later returned to English football with Sheffield Wednesday.
His visit to Berriew therefore provided a memorable backdrop to the club’s own awards, with the timing allowing Jones and Hamer to receive their prizes from the former England international.
For Jones, it was simply a fortunate coincidence that his August and September award arrived just before Waddle’s appearance at the club.
However, the Berriew boss has plenty of experience of rubbing shoulders with English football royalty having signed ex-Arsenal star Paul Merson and Bradford City legend turned TV celebrity Chris Kamara during his time at the helm of Welshpool Town.
