Alexander Volkanovski’s coach has picked who he wants the champion to fight next at featherweight, despite talks of a super fight.

This past Saturday, Alexander Volkanovski knocked Movsar Evloev out in the second round of their UFC 333 main event, once again successfully defending his featherweight title.

‘The Great’ Volkanovski went into his fight with an illness, but refused to take medication as he didn’t want to gain any sort of performative advantage in the fight.

And with what was another incredible performance, the 38-year-old champion has further enhanced his position as the greatest featherweight of all time, but he may not be staying at 145lbs.

Joe Lopez rules Jean Silva out as Volkanovski’s next opponent as he picks Aljamain Sterling

Ahead of his clash against the undefeated Russian, Volkanovski called for a super fight against Justin Gaethje, if everything went well for him on Saturday night. And now following this weekend’s action, Dana White is on board with Volkanovski’s idea, saying that he would work with the Australian to give him a special fight next.

However, if Gaethje decides that he doesn’t want to fight ‘The Great’ next, then the 38-year-old will likely continue to fight featherweight contenders, further clearing out the division. And Volkanovski has already highlighted two contenders that he could fight next at 145lbs. Despite Volk’s comments, though, his head coach Joe Lopez has somewhat ruled out the idea of fighting Jean Silva next, claiming that he hasn’t done enough to earn a title shot.

“It’s always going to be up to Volk, there’s talks of him and Gaethje doing one last dance, winner takes all, that would be pretty special,” Lopez told Submission Radio. “I’d like that (Aljamain Sterling) fight, I’m pretty good friends with Aljo and I’ve discussed it with him, we’re down for it and like we said, we’d shake hands and still be friends, Aljo is all for it, I’m all for it, Aljo just has to do the work against Kevin Vallejos.

“I just hope Aljo puts on a show and they give him a crack at the title because he deserves it, he’s been in there, he’s a former bantamweight champion, that’d be great for Volk to being able to take out a legend like Aljo. Jean Silva makes a lot of noise and he’s a great fighter but he hasn’t earned the shot, there are a lot of guys in front of him,” Lopez continued.

Sterling is scheduled to fight Kevin Vallejos on November 21 in a five round main event. If the former bantamweight champion does pick up the win against the soaring contender, it will mark his fourth win at featherweight since moving up from 135lbs, with his only loss being against Evloev.
