College freshmen Bo Bassett and Everest Leydecker won their first senior world titles, while Kyle Snyder won his fifth on one of the most successful days in U.S. wrestling history on Friday.
Bassett, 20, became the second-youngest U.S. male wrestler to win a world title after Snyder, who won his first at age 19 in 2015.
Bassett routed Vazgen Tevanyan of Armenia 9-1 in the 65kg final in his senior worlds debut in Astana, Kazakhstan.
He’s the second American in the last 50 years to win a world title in the lightweight category after Bill Zadick in 2006.
Bassett completed a 170-0 high school career in Pennsylvania this past March, then matriculated at Virginia Tech. He won a U17 world title in 2021 and a U20 world title this past August. Two weeks ago, he was ninth at the U23 worlds.
Now he has an inside track to making the 2028 Olympic team, should USA Wrestling keep its past procedures in place. For years, USA Wrestling rewarded world medalists by giving them a bye into the finals of the next year’s competition to determine the world or Olympic team.
Bassett has a bye into next April’s final trials series for the 2027 Worlds in Las Vegas, and if he wins a medal there would clinch a bye into the 2028 Olympic Trials finals, should USA Wrestling keep its past procedures in place.
Snyder would, too, under the same circumstances at 97kg. He won a fifth world title at the weight, defeating Arash Yoshida of Japan 4-4 on tiebreaking criteria. Snyder was down 4-0 with 41 seconds left, then scored two takedowns, according to USA Wrestling.
Snyder, the only American to win a world title in their teens, 20s and 30s, is one title shy of the U.S. record of six shared by Jordan Burroughs and Adeline Gray.
He now shares the U.S. record of nine total world medals with Kristie Davis, Helen Maroulis, Bruce Baumgartner, Burroughs and Gray.
Leydecker, 19, is the second-youngest U.S. female wrestler to win a world title after Amit Elor, who won in 2022 at age 18 and 2023 at age 19, then took Olympic gold in 2024 at age 20, breaking Snyder’s record as the youngest American to become an Olympic champion.
Leydecker defeated Nataliia Klivchutska of Ukraine 4-1 in the final at 55kg, which is not an Olympic weight class.
Leydecker, a University of Iowa freshman, repeated as World U20 champion in August and took bronze at the World U23 Championships two weeks ago.
Also Friday, Abby Nette took silver at 59kg, her first senior world medal at age 28. India’s Manisha Bhanwala defeated Nette 8-6 in the final of the non-Olympic weight class.
Worlds continue Saturday featuring two-time Olympic bronze medalist Kyle Dake in the 86kg final, seeking his fifth world title across three different weights.
