Manuel Gonzalez clinched a dramatic pole position for the Moto2 Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island, setting a blistering lap time of 1:30.122 to outpace Barry Baltus by just 0.100 seconds. The qualifying session was rocked by a late crash involving local favourite Senna Agius, who had dominated the early stages with a 1:30.295 but lost control of his Kalex in the fast turn 8 on his final flying lap, destroying his bike and ending his hopes of a front-row start. Agius, a teammate of championship leader Gonzalez, will now have to start from seventh place in front of his home crowd.

Despite Friday’s fastest rider Izan Guevara struggling to replicate his pace, the Pramac Yamaha rider managed to climb from ninth to sixth by the session’s end, finishing just 0.155 seconds shy of the top spot. He will line up alongside Ivan Ortola in fourth and Dani Holgado in fifth, rounding out the competitive front half of the grid. David Alonso was less fortunate, only managing 14th place in qualifying.

The closing moments of Q2 were marred by multiple incidents. Alongside Agius’s crash, Luca Lunetta and Mario Aji also suffered falls in the final minutes, triggering yellow flags that prevented any further improvements. These incidents underscored the high stakes and razor-thin margins at Phillip Island.

Adding to the drama, two riders will be absent from the race start: Aron Canet from the Marc VDS team, sidelined with a fractured thumb sustained on Friday, and Alex Escrig of the Forward team, injured during Free Practice 1.

Gonzalez’s pole, capitalising on Agius’s misfortune, sets the stage for an intense showdown in the Moto2 championship battle. The Spanish rider’s ability to seize the moment under pressure will be pivotal as the grid prepares for a fiercely contested Australian Grand Prix.
