Mikey Moore: Bewilderment and impatience as Tottenham loan turns into total mess

Tottenham Hotspur youngster Mikey Moore has found himself in the firing line at Cologne, with the German club very unhappy at his loan deal so far.

The 19-year-old joined the German side on loan in the summer. The plan was for him to be a regular player, gain experience and perhaps return ready to compete at Spurs next season.

Initially, everyone was happy with the move. Cologne believed they’d got a star man in the making, and a player who would prove to be key. Tottenham, meanwhile, secured the type of loan that they wanted and avoided a purchase clause being included in the deal.

But it is yet to work out for either party. The first signs of trouble came at the end of September. Sport Witness reported at that point how Cologne manager René Wagner had been left with a dilemma over the Tottenham loanee.

Basically, Moore wasn’t performing as they had hoped and he had to decide whether to honour a first team promise or change things for the better of the team.

Growing frustration

The situation has not improved since then. A report last month then detailed comments from Wagner. He explained how they couldn’t force the situation with the Tottenham man. Again, the crux was that Moore isn’t living up to expectations.

“We have players who may not have decided games yet, but they can and will in the future,” he said.

“We will equip them with the confidence they need. But they still need to find their feet because they come from other countries and other leagues.

“Mikey is eagerly awaiting the moment when things ‘click’. He already showed in Glasgow, but even there, it took time. If he manages it here, then he’ll also know that he can beat any opponent in a one-on-one situation. Then everything will be a bit easier, but you can’t force it.”

Two days after those comments, Sport Witness reported how Moore had held a one-on-one conversation with Wagner about his situation.

That report insisted that Cologne were convinced about the Tottenham loanee and know that he ‘knows how to play’. The problem is that there’s nothing tangible to show for it yet.

Total disaster

Fast forward to the beginning of November and the situation appears to have changed drastically. BILD now report that things are going ‘awry’ for the Tottenham winger.

They explain that after arriving in August with a clear goal of performing regularly and making a name for himself ahead of returning to Tottenham next year.

A few months in, though, he has no goals, no assists and no spot in the starting eleven. There has been no development. And sky-high expectations at the club aren’t helping him.

The German club broke internal club policy to bring Moore in on a one-year loan without an option to buy. Sporting director Thomas Kessler was convinced of Moore’s potential and that he would be a key player this season.

Now, there is a ‘sense of bewilderment’ and ‘growing impatience’ at the transfer. Moore has not been the difference maker that everyone had hoped he would be.

The belief is that while Moore has the talent, he only shows it in flashes and does it ‘all too rarely’. He also lacks consistency and a goalscoring threat. And compounding the issue is a mix of frustration and pressure.

That pressure is only growing, and the club’s leadership is demanding more from him.

“An assist or a goal from Mikey Moore, that’s still something I’d have on my personal bingo card,” coach Wagner remarked just before the match against Berlin. The transfer is now seen as “Moore mess” by some at the club.

The England U20 captain was expected to shine as a playmaker and jump start Cologne’s attack. More importantly, he was supposed to mask the failure to sign a replacement for Jakub Kaminski.

So far, both objectives have failed. And the Tottenham man’s arrival is seen as a ‘total mess’.
