SEC Power Rankings, Week 9: Texas gets redemption as the mayhem only intensifies

The Longhorns are on the way back up as chaos continues to reign in the SEC

What exactly am I supposed to make of the SEC this season? No, seriously, I need some help.

This league cannibalizes itself on a weekly basis, which essentially twists my brain into a pretzel as I attempt to organize these rankings. Texas is one of the biggest conundrums.

Two weeks ago, the Longhorns looked helpless against a sophomore quarterback making his first career start in their loss to Florida. Fast forward one week, and Texas neutralized the best quarterback in the conference as it forced Trinidad Chambliss into three interceptions en route to a massive win over Ole Miss.

Then there's the transitive property. Tennessee suffered a heartbreaking road loss to South Carolina, which got boat-raced by Alabama -- the same Alabama team that the Volunteers pushed around at Neyland Stadium.

The only thing you can count on in the SEC this year is that no team can be counted on from one week to another. That makes for a ton of excitement as a fan, but it makes for a headache when putting together power rankings, though I bravely accepted that task again this week.

As the conference eats itself alive, here are the updated SEC Power Rankings.

1. Georgia Bulldogs

Last week: 1

Because the SEC is a mess, Georgia remained atop the rankings through a loss and an open date. The Bulldogs will have a chance to earn their spot this weekend in a rivalry game against Florida in Atlanta. Georgia is riding a five-game winning streak in that series, but the Gators entered their open date coming off a huge win over Texas. It'll be interesting to see how Kirby Smart and his team respond after a stunning loss to Auburn.

2. Kentucky Wildcats

Last week: 3

Another week, another win for Kentucky. The Wildcats overcame a slow start against Vanderbilt and are guaranteed to begin November at 7-1, right in the thick of the College Football Playoff race. Quarterback Kenny Minchey has been a great fit in Will Stein's offense, completing 69% of his passes for 1,755 yards, 14 touchdowns and just one interception. It's been a while since Kentucky was this strong at the quarterback position.

3. LSU Tigers

Last week: 4

Are the Tigers starting to hit their stride as we roll toward the home stretch? Since losing to Kentucky, LSU has crushed Mississippi State and Auburn by a combined score of 69-17. There is some context needed there because the Bulldogs didn't have Kamario Taylor, but Lane Kiffin's offense has been dominant. Sam Leavitt may finally be getting healthy, and the return of star tight end Trey'Dez Green is huge. The Tigers might prefer to play again on Saturday to keep this momentum before hosting Alabama, but they'll get a week off instead.

4. Texas Longhorns

Last week: 8

Figuring out which Texas team will show up from one week to the next -- or one play to the next -- is an impossible task. The Longhorns were everything from national championship contender to SEC also-ran against Ole Miss, but the good outweighed the bad in a critical win. Despite a couple of mistakes, Arch Manning answered the call and did enough to keep the critics at bay, and the defense held up extremely well against Trinidad Chambliss. That game was proof that Texas can be a juggernaut when everything comes together, but how long will it be until Mr. Hyde shows up again?

5. Alabama Crimson Tide

Last week: 6

Things got a little sweaty in Tuscaloosa when Texas A&M took a three-point lead in the second half, but Keelon Russell put on his cape and delivered a relatively stress-free win for Alabama in the fourth quarter. The Crimson Tide still can't run the ball effectively, but that doesn't matter when Russell and the receivers are firing on all cylinders. Can Kalen DeBoer bank on that against LSU in Baton Rouge coming out of the open date? The Tide have to unlock something on the ground over the next two weeks because they can't be one-dimensional in Death Valley.

6. Ole Miss Rebels

Last week: 2

Ole Miss showed some serious resolve by digging out of a 21-point hole in Austin, but it couldn't complete the comeback. A horrific first half was ultimately too much to overcome, and Trinidad Chambliss played his worst game of the season. A run defense that improved coming out of the open date regressed, allowing 207 yards to the Longhorns. The Rebels' playoff fate may come down to the Georgia matchup on Nov. 7, but it has to get past a wounded Auburn team first.

7. Tennessee Volunteers

Last week: 5

The Volunteers blew a terrific opportunity to enter November with one College Football Playoff mulligan available. Twelve total penalties -- three of which wiped out touchdowns -- and a botched fourth-and-1 attempt resulted in a soul-crushing loss. Tennessee now has two weeks to sit with that disappointment before a top-10 Kentucky team rolls into Neyland Stadium. With zero margin for error left, Tennessee can't afford to keep shooting itself in the foot.

8. Florida Gators

Last week: 9

With the Gators coming out of the open date, all eyes are on the quarterback position against Georgia. Sophomore Tramell Jones led Florida to a road win over Texas with Aaron Philo injured, but did Jones play well enough to lock down the job? He wasn't very efficient through the air but extended plays and picked up extra yardage with his legs. Jon Sumrall isn't giving anything away, and there could be a slight edge in forcing Kirby Smart to prepare for both quarterbacks.

9. South Carolina Gamecocks

Last week: 12

Cocktober believers were validated on Saturday night as fans rushed the field at Williams-Brice Stadium. Is South Carolina poised for another midseason turnaround, similar to the 2024 season? The Gamecocks have a very favorable schedule down the stretch, and if LaNorris Sellers plays the way he did against Tennessee, that offense will be a handful. That unit will be tested again this weekend as South Carolina travels to Norman to clash with Oklahoma, though it may not take many points to come away with a win.

10. Missouri Tigers

Last week: 9

The return of Ahmad Hardy is excellent news for everyone involved. If Hardy can get back into game shape for the home stretch, the Tigers will have the best backfield in the country. Jamal Roberts already ranks seventh nationally with 867 yards, and Hardy finished second last season with 1,649 rushing yards. Missouri probably won't need reinforcements against Arkansas this weekend, but Hardy could be a huge boost when the team faces Texas and Georgia in the coming weeks.

11. Oklahoma Sooners

Last week: 13

I don't want to give the Sooners too much credit for beating Mississippi State without Kamario Taylor for most of the game, but the offense put up a rare respectable performance against a Power Four opponent. That's something! John Mateer totaled 320 yards and two passing touchdowns (with zero turnovers), and Isaiah Sategna III torched the Bulldogs for 164 receiving yards and a score. Maybe that gives Oklahoma some confidence going into the South Carolina game.

12. Auburn Tigers

Last week: 10

The high of a win over No. 1 Georgia was followed by a demolition at the hands of LSU. The Tigers were never really competitive in that game, and the offensive line was an unmitigated disaster. Auburn averaged just 1.9 yards per attempt on the ground, and it allowed seven sacks and 12 tackles for loss. Life for the Tigers may get worse before it gets better because they have to play what I can only assume is a frustrated Ole Miss team in Oxford.

13. Mississippi State Bulldogs

Last week: 11

With Kamario Taylor battling injury, Mississippi State hasn't been able to muster any kind of threat offensively. The Bulldogs have now lost three games in a row, and it may be time to give Appalachian State transfer AJ Swann a look at quarterback if Taylor is unable to play against Texas this weekend. What started as such an exciting and promising season for Mississippi State may result in a fight just to reach bowl eligibility.

14. Texas A&M Aggies

Last week: 14

How many more games will Texas A&M win this season? That's a serious question. The Aggies finish the season with South Carolina (road), Tennessee (home), Oklahoma (road) and Texas (home). Can they get the split necessary just to reach bowl eligibility? Perhaps, but 1-3 seems a lot more likely based on what we've seen from Texas A&M since conference play began all the way back in Week 3.

15. Arkansas Razorbacks

Last week: 15

Arkansas got to bask in the glow of its first SEC victory for an extra week due to the open date. Now we'll see whether the Razorbacks can use their win over Vanderbilt as a springboard for the rest of the season. If that's going to happen, KJ Jackson has to take advantage of a Missouri defense that's somewhat vulnerable through the air, allowing 226 passing yards per game. The Hogs are looking to snap a four-game losing streak in that series.

16. Vanderbilt Commodores

Last week: 16

Another week, another loss for the Commodores. That makes five in a row, but Vanderbilt gets a reprieve in the form of an open date. With the exception of Jared Curtis, it's hard to find anything that's working for the Dores these days. Their run game is abysmal coming off a 15-yard showing against Kentucky, and the run defense is getting steamrolled on a regular basis. Clark Lea will have his hands full trying to plug leaks over the next couple of weeks.
