Dublin goalkeeper 'disappointed' after being dropped from county panel - but refuses to close door on top level career

While the news represents a setback for the Cuala man, the door has not been slammed shut on a return to the Sky Blue jersey

Sean Brennan has refused to close the door on his Dublin career after being cut from the county hurling panel earlier this month.

The Cuala goalkeeper admits the decision was disappointing, but is keeping his focus firmly on Saturday’s Dublin senior hurling final against Kilmacud Crokes at Parnell Park.

Brennan and Crokes man Dara Purcell have both lost their places in the Dublin squad, while veteran Liam Rushe has called time on his inter-county career.

But while the news represents a setback for Brennan, the door has not been slammed shut on a return to the Sky Blue jersey.

“I was let go from the panel. It is disappointing,” he said.

“But look, we’re in the middle of the club season, big game coming up, so it's always compartmentalised, I suppose. I’ll give it a proper bit of thought now when the club season ends.

“I'll be cheering them on from the couch and wishing them the best of luck for the season ahead, but unfortunately I won't be involved.”

Brennan has enjoyed plenty of memorable days in Dublin colours, and the goalkeeper is in no doubt about what representing his county means to him.

While he is prepared to take stock of the situation once Cuala’s club campaign is over, he would give serious consideration to any approach from the Dublin management in the future.

“If a phone call was to come in the future, you’d give it a good strong consideration,” he said.

“Playing for Dublin is the pinnacle of anyone's career. It's a great honour and a great pleasure to ever wear that jersey.

“I've had some good days and bad days and some days in between, so of course, yeah, I'd love to go back at some stage in the future if the chance arises.”
