Colchester-born Tom Lockett earns England A call-up

The Colchester-born Northampton Saints forward has been selected in a 30-man training squad ahead of England A’s meeting with Argentina XV at The Rec in Bath on Friday night.

It is another significant milestone for Lockett, whose sporting story began much closer to home.

The lock attended Colchester Royal Grammar School and was previously part of Colchester United’s academy before eventually turning his attention to rugby.

Lockett also has strong connections with Colchester Rugby Club, who are listed as his community club by England Rugby.

Now the Northampton Saints man has been handed an opportunity to impress within the senior England pathway as he continues his rise in the sport.

Lockett is one of 16 forwards selected by England A head coach Mark Mapletoft for Friday’s fixture, which kicks off at 7.45pm and will be shown live on the England Rugby YouTube channel and Premier Sports.

The 30-player group was chosen through a collaborative selection process involving Mapletoft, England senior head coach Steve Borthwick and RFU executive director of rugby performance Conor O’Shea.

Mapletoft believes the England A programme offers those selected an important opportunity to continue their development within the national environment.

He said: “This squad brings together a group of players who have earned an exciting opportunity through their performances, marking the start of an important week of connection, growth and learning.

“The 'A' programme plays a key role in strengthening the identity of English rugby, creating alignment across the pathway and giving players the chance to experience what it means to represent England in a high-performance environment.

“There is real ambition within this group, and we are looking forward to building strong relationships, developing cohesion and unity, and taking another step forward together ahead of a physical and demanding test at The Rec.”

Lockett’s inclusion puts him alongside a number of players who already have senior international experience.

Jamie Blamire, Ethan Roots and George Kloska are among the forwards selected, while Charlie Atkinson, Noah Caluori, Joe Carpenter, Luke Northmore and Max Ojomoh provide senior England experience among the backs.

England A’s clash with Argentina XV is their first fixture of the 2026/27 campaign.

They will then face Ireland XV at Sandy Park, Exeter, on February 20 before taking on Chile at Kingsholm, six days later.
