Chelsea host Manchester United on Saturday looking to respond after last weekend's defeat to Tottenham, while United arrive at Stamford Bridge still searching for their first away league win of the season. Our Chelsea vs Man United prediction favors the hosts, whose attacking midfielders should find space between United's double pivot and back four.
Cole Palmer is available after serving his suspension in the Carabao Cup, but Joao Pedro's thigh injury leaves Chelsea without their leading league scorer. United's biggest question is whether Bruno Fernandes returns to the starting XI after being left on the bench against Bournemouth.
Kickoff: Saturday, Oct. 31 at 12:30 PM GMT / 8:30 AM ET / 5:30 AM PT
Venue: Stamford Bridge, London (capacity 40,044)
Predicted lineups: Chelsea are projected in the 3-4-2-1 Xabi Alonso has used this season, with Mike Penders in goal for the injured Emiliano Martinez, Pedro Neto and Marco Palestra as the wing-backs, and Palmer and Quenda behind Morgan Rogers with Joao Pedro out. Man United are projected in a 4-2-3-1 with Senne Lammens in goal, Leny Yoro and Diogo Dalot at full-back, Carlos Baleba and Youri Tielemans in the pivot, and Fernandes between Amad Diallo and Matheus Cunha behind Bryan Mbeumo.

Palmer's second yellow card at Tottenham brought a one-match ban, and it lands on the Carabao Cup tie at Anfield rather than this game, so he returns behind Rogers. Joao Pedro (thigh) is the bigger loss. Alonso said he will be out "for a few weeks" without putting a number on it, so he misses this game and likely the Nov. 8 trip to Sunderland. Rogers stays at the front of the 3-4-2-1, as he did against Tottenham, with Quenda, who made his first Premier League start last Saturday, beside Palmer. Danny Welbeck is the other striker option, and Emmanuel Emegha (hamstring) is available for the Carabao Cup tie at Liverpool and could add a third.
Left wing-back is the other open call. Pep Chavarria (undisclosed) missed the last two games and is back in partial training, with a return listed for this game, and Malo Gusto is fit again after an illness. Palestra is projected on the left, with Jorrel Hato, who started there at Everton and Tottenham, the alternative.
Emiliano Martinez (jaw) had surgery after the collision at Everton and Alonso said he needs "a few weeks", so Penders is projected to start again. Reece James (knee) isn't expected back until January and Jamie Gittens (ankle) is still a few weeks away, so neither touches the XI. Chelsea play at Liverpool on Wednesday, so this XI could still move.
With Pedro out, the left wing-back place and whether Alonso keeps Rogers up front are the two calls that settle the XI.
The thinnest areas are the left side and the middle of the park. Luke Shaw (undisclosed) is out for several matches and Patrick Dorgu (hamstring) is out too, which leaves Dalot at left-back with Noussair Mazraoui, back from a back problem, as cover. Benjamin Sesko (lower leg) isn't expected back until the new year, so Mbeumo is the projected striker, and Marcus Rashford (hip) was left out of the Bournemouth squad and stays a game-time decision.
Carrick's status is settled for now, and Fernandes decides the middle of the XI. Carrick left him on the bench on Sunday after the captain reportedly criticised the coaching staff's tactics following the 4-1 loss at Como, Carrick said the decision was tactical, and Fernandes was reported to be in for treatment on Monday with an unspecified issue before training with the squad on Tuesday. Kobbie Mainoo (undisclosed) is also listed as a game-time decision, with Carrick's estimate of about 10 days on Oct. 20 putting him close to this game. If neither is ready or selected, Andrey Santos, who started at Leeds, is the other option beside Baleba.
Lisandro Martinez (thigh) came on for Ayden Heaven at Bournemouth after missing the Como game and projects beside Maguire, which would put Heaven, back from illness, and Matthijs de Ligt, who returned from a long back injury last week, on the bench.
A start for Fernandes keeps Tielemans in the pivot, and another benching moves Tielemans up to the No. 10 with Santos coming in.
Man United lead the Premier League series with 21 wins to Chelsea's 20 and 27 draws in 68 meetings. The table shows the last five league meetings at Stamford Bridge.

Cunha scored on the stroke of half-time in April's win, when Chelsea were managed by Liam Rosenior.
Chelsea's recent results show two wins, a draw and two defeats in their last five league games, the latest a 2-0 home loss to Tottenham on Oct. 24. Man United's recent results show three draws and two defeats over the same stretch, the latest the 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth, and they haven't won away from home in the league this season.
The pocket in front of Man United's back four is where Chelsea's best chances should come from.
Chelsea's 3-4-2-1 puts Palmer and Quenda between the lines behind Rogers, and United's 4-2-3-1 leaves Baleba and Tielemans to cover that ground with Fernandes the only other central player ahead of them. If one of the pivot steps out to Palmer, Quenda gets the half-space he leaves, and if Maguire or Martinez follows Rogers when he drops, a gap opens behind them for whoever runs from the second line.
United's route is the space behind Chelsea's wing-backs. Neto and Palestra will be high on the pitch, which leaves Acheampong and Colwill defending the channels beside Lacroix, and Diallo and Cunha can attack those channels from wide. Through the middle United meet three centre-backs and a pivot of Caicedo and Henderson, so the width is their better way to pull Chelsea's back three apart.
The same shape explains why Fernandes matters to United. At No. 10 he is the one player who can pick a pass between Chelsea's pivot and its back three, and without him Tielemans has to try it from deeper, with less of the pitch in front of him.
Chelsea are home favorites at all four books, from -140 to -125, with Man United between +310 and +320 and the draw from +275 to +300.

Baleba made his first league start of the season at Leeds on Oct. 18, so he has had few league minutes in front of the back four. Palmer was booked at Everton and sent off at Tottenham, which makes how he commits to a challenge on Baleba after losing the ball part of the duel as well.
Neto was booked in each of his last two league games, at Everton and Tottenham, so he has to pick his moments when Dalot breaks forward. Dalot, projected at left-back, made three interceptions and created three chances at Leeds, and Cunha ahead of him gives United a second option down that side.
Mbeumo took 24 shots, 10 on target, in United's first seven league games, which makes him the main shooter in United's attack. Lacroix is described as an aggressive defender who closes the ball down early, and if he steps out to meet Mbeumo, Acheampong or Colwill has to cover the space behind him.
Set-piece responsibility for both clubs comes from RotoWire's Premier League set-piece takers guide, which covers all 20 teams for 2026-27.
Chelsea
Manchester United
Chelsea should have the stronger attacking positions through Palmer and Quenda between the lines. If Baleba or Tielemans steps out to meet either one, space opens around United's center-backs for Rogers or a runner from midfield.
United still have enough quality to threaten on the break. Mbeumo, Cunha and Diallo can attack the spaces behind Chelsea's wing-backs, while Fernandes would add another player capable of finding the final pass if he returns to the XI.
Chelsea's home advantage and greater control through midfield make them the better pick, but United's transition threat makes a clean sheet less certain than the scoreline suggests.
Score Prediction: Chelsea 2-0 Manchester United
After the Carabao Cup tie at Liverpool, Chelsea's next league game is at Sunderland on Sunday, Nov. 8, while Man United host Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday, Nov. 3 and Aston Villa in the league on Sunday, Nov. 8.
