Aston Villa youngster has been touted to be the next key figure in the team following his fine form after crushing Viking FK in the Champions League last night.
Aston Villa picked up another convincing win in the Champions League match at their home turf. They dismantled the debutant Viking Stavanger FK 3-1. Ross Barkley, Emi Buendia’s penalty and the own goal from Henrik Heiggheim gave them the three-goal lead before Peter Christiansen’s scored a mere consolation goal.
The star of the match was actually none of the scorer but Alysson Edward. The 20-year-old winger contributed heavily in this third continental victory. The Argentina midfielder who has been tipped to have a contract extension soon, Emi Buendia, expressed his compliment for his young teammate, as reported in Sky Sports.
”He was incredible. He’s showing his potential, his ability on the wing. Also Ibrahim Mbaye as well – their speed, their qualities. It’s going to help the team a lot, so it’s very important to have them and to try to help them to improve because they are young talents.”
The young Brazilian winger was incredible in the game. He was the key man in the game with his pace and acceleration to win the one-on-one duel to penetrate the opposition backline from the right flank.
He won the penalties in the first half and his run led to Villa’s third goal. Viking FK’s defender Erik Heggheim could only divert it to his team’s own goal. He created three shots, one of them was on target, three key passes and 54 touches. Alysson also dribbled four times with two unstoppable touch in the final third. He also made 36 passes, two crosses with one of which being accurate.
Emery’s idea of rotating the squad as well as experimenting on certain position seemed to have worked well. Villa boss deployed Tyrone Mings as the left back as expected to be the temporary solution to their left back crisis, while on the right flank, Emery opted to play Joao Gomes there instead of Lamare Bogarde to fill in the post.
The Brazilian midfielder who normally featured as defensive midfelder did his task well. Gomes made two tackles, one interception, and one clearance. He also made 70 passes, one cross, two long balls with one of which being accurate and one dribble plus one unstoppable touch before being substituted by Matty Cash in the 70th minute.
Regarding Alysson’s form as well as another youngster, Ibrahim Mbaye, Emery hinted his satisfaction with their display.
It was a step forward for both players in our idea, so really happy.”
The Spanish boss’ idea to bring on Alejandro Garnacho to replace Mbaye in the 72nd minute is widely appreciated too. The Argentine winger was able to outrun the opposition defender following the long ball from Zion Suzuki. The former Chelsea man even had two chances to open his account.
