Michael Carrick's Man Utd Job Is in the Balance, But at Least He's Going Out in Style
Dan Istitene

Being a football manager is no easy job. Particularly when you're in charge of Manchester United, where the pressure is enormous, the scrutiny relentless and every negative result brings a fresh round of questions about your future.

Things aren't looking particularly good for Michael Carrick right now. Following Manchester United's humiliating 3–0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday, the club has slipped to 16th in the Premier League, with just one league win to their name this season. Eight games without a victory, six defeats in 12 matches across all competitions and now, according to The Guardian, crisis talks among the club's hierarchy over whether to sack him. Not exactly the ideal start to the week.

But while Carrick might have plenty to worry about on the pitch, there's at least one thing he seems to have under control: his wardrobe.

On the touchline at Old Trafford, Carrick looked every bit the modern football manager in a smart, dark navy overcoat, worn over a matching zip-neck knit and tailored trousers. It was a relatively simple outfit, but a very good one. And while the expression on his face suggested he had rather more pressing matters on his mind, his clothes told a different story.

The long coat and monochromatic colour palette gave the outfit a smart, almost formal feel, but Carrick kept things grounded with a pair of dark Adidas Munchen II SPZL's, complete with the brand's signature three white stripes. It's a combination that strikes that increasingly popular balance between traditional tailoring and sportswear, and one that would look just as good heading out for dinner as it does pacing the touchline.

A watch with a light-coloured dial and brown leather strap also made an appearance beneath his sleeve, adding another quietly smart detail to the ensemble. Carrick isn't dressing like someone desperate to attract attention, even if his team's recent performances have ensured he's getting plenty of it.

If Sunday's appearance does turn out to have been one of his last at Old Trafford, at least he can take some comfort in knowing he went out looking the part. The football might be falling apart, but the fit certainly isn't.
