CBS Sports' Brad Crawford revisited the old Bowl Championship Series formula to examine how the nation's top 25 teams would rank before the playoff committee releases its first ranking on Nov. 3.
Florida ranks No. 17 with a score of 0.3154 in CBS Sports' simulated BCS standings ahead of the College Football Playoff committee's first official ranking release. The Gators are one of eight SEC programs in the simulated top 17, including Georgia, which ranks No. 4 with a 0.8364 score.
Kentucky, Alabama, Texas, LSU, Ole Miss and Tennessee all landed ahead of Florida on this list, while Missouri trails behind.
"The sheer number of SEC teams in these rankings speaks to the league's latest strength-of-schedule metrics, which suggest the five toughest slates in the sport this season all reside in this conference," wrote Crawford.
Despite their uncharacteristically poor showing against unranked Auburn, Georgia remains one of the nation's leading national championship contenders. The Bulldogs offer Florida a chance to strengthen its playoff case, as a win over Kirby Smart's team would boost the Gators' resume and make a major case with the committee.
If the Gators can upend the 'Dawgs, they'll see Kentucky two weeks later. The Wildcats are currently 7-1 and have beaten two top-10-ranked opponents.
