As the winter transfer window approaches, Barcelona’s sporting management is intensifying plans to address structural vulnerabilities that have been ruthlessly exposed by a punishing injury crisis.

With Hansi Flick demanding immediate reinforcements to stabilize a fragile backline, the club’s financial limitations mean that any incoming defensive arrival will strictly depend on generating funds through significant player sales.

Balancing the books while trying to secure high-priority targets has forced the Catalan hierarchy into making difficult decisions regarding the current squad.

The player identified as the leading candidate for a shock January sale to fund these crucial defensive reinforcements is 23-year-old full-back Alejandro Balde, according to Marca.

Once viewed as an untouchable pillar of the club’s future and an undisputed starter, the Spanish defender has seen his standing plummet drastically under Hansi Flick.

For Deco and the board, cashing in on a homegrown asset provides a viable economic pathway to finance a top-tier central defender without violating strict financial fair play limits.

Although Balde has previously resisted thoughts of an exit, his lack of regular minutes and the emergence of alternative options under Flick make a winter departure increasingly plausible.

With other clubs closely monitoring his situation, the coming weeks will prove decisive in determining whether the young defender becomes the ultimate sacrifice to rescue Barcelona’s defensive season.

Ultimately, parting ways with a player of his profile carries inherent risks, but the sheer urgency of Flick’s sporting project overrides sentimentality.

If negotiations progress and a suitable offer arrives, Barcelona are prepared to sanction a move that would clear vital wage space and provide the exact financial leverage needed to bring in a much-needed defensive anchor when the transfer market officially reopens.
