Everton collected their first Premier League away win of the season with a hard-fought victory over Newcastle United. For the second time in four days the Blues secured a huge victory over the Magpies with Thierno Barry's second-half goal here the difference here.
Barry's goal arrived four minutes into the second-half after quick thinking from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall released Tyrique George, whose effort was saved, but the forward was there to turn the ball home from a couple of yards out. The Blues also had Jordan Pickford to thank for all three points after he made a great save in the closing stages to deny Yoane Wissa.
The ECHO was in attendance at St James' Park and below is how our man Connor O'Neill rated Everton's players.
Jordan Pickford - 8
Dealt with a deflected cross well during the opening 45 minutes, but came alive in the second-half to produce an outstanding block to keep his side ahead and then another great save to deny Yoane Wissa in the closing stages.
Jake O'Brien - 7
Stupidly gave away a free-kick for pushing Lewis Hall during the first-half, and also needlessly gave the ball away on a number of occasions. However, he did prove the sort of steel that the Blues have been lacking in recent weeks.
Jarrad Branthwaite - 8
A commanding display on his return to the side. Produced a number of vital blocks and interventions. Outstanding positional play. Subbed.
James Tarkowski - 7
Continued his impressive form with a commanding display. Didn't give Will Osula a sniff and was prepared to put his body on the line with several blocks.
Vitalii Mykolenko - 7
Linked up well with George, and produced a vital intervention to prevent a Newcastle chance midway through the first-half. But the block he produced to keep his side ahead in the second-half was even better. It denied a certain goal.
James Garner - 7
Showed more signs of returning to his best. He had to be physical and he was. Showed good game intelligence, but should have done better with a first-half free-kick on the edge of the Newcastle box.
Harrison Armstrong - 7
Should have opened the scoring with the last kick of the first-half. And was unlucky that a few clever moments of play never came off for him. Did the ugly side of the game well in the second-half.
Merlin Rohl - 7
Offered plenty of energy down the right playing in front of Jake O'Brien, but his final ball could have been better on several occasions. But in games like this one, you need players who are going to get stuck in.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall - 8
Best player on the pitch. His quick thinking enabled his side to open the scoring and he was unlucky not to claim another assist. He was everywhere and embodied everything good about his side.
Tyrique George - 7
Showed flashes of real quality and was a threat down the left, but was also guilty of giving the ball away on a number of occasions. But he did play a key role in Barry's goal. Getting better. Subbed.
Thierno Barry - 7
Struggled against Dan Burn, but he produced a moment of quality to set up a chance for Rohl and also should have done better with an opportunity a few yards out. However, he took his next chance. Subbed.
