Manchester United have endured a frustrating start to the 2026/27 season, with Michael Carrick’s side struggling to find consistency in the Premier League.
The Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday, extending their winless run and increasing the pressure on Carrick.
United have now managed just one victory in their opening 7 league matches, leaving them playing catch-up in the race for European qualification.
Injuries have also complicated matters for Carrick, with several first-team players facing fitness issues as the club attempts to turn its season around.
There is, however, still reason for optimism at Old Trafford, particularly when it comes to the development of the club’s younger players.
United’s academy has produced several generations of talented footballers, and Kobbie Mainoo remains one of the most exciting midfield prospects to emerge from the club in recent years.
The 21-year-old has now received recognition for his performances last season after being presented with his PFA Young Player of the Year Top Six Award, having been shortlisted for the prestigious individual prize.
Kobbie Mainoo enjoyed an important second half of the 2025/26 season, establishing himself as a key component of Carrick’s midfield as United secured a third-place Premier League finish and Champions League qualification.
One of his defining moments arrived in May, when he scored the winning goal in a thrilling 3-2 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford.
His strike helped seal United’s return to Europe’s premier club competition.
The midfielder subsequently committed his future to the club with a new contract running until 2031 and earned a place in England’s 2026 World Cup squad.
Mainoo has continued to feature regularly this season, recording 6 Premier League appearances, 5 starts and 1 assist before United’s latest fixture against Leeds.
Although Mainoo missed out on the Young Player of the Year prize, which went to Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly, making the final six remains recognition of his progress.
United supporters will hope he can build on that achievement and become an even more influential figure in the midfield as the season develops.
The club also had another reason to celebrate at the PFA Awards, with captain Bruno Fernandes winning the 2026 PFA Players’ Player of the Year after registering a record-breaking 21 Premier League assists last season.
Mainoo’s recognition also places him among a long line of United players to have been honoured by their peers.
Previous PFA Young Player of the Year winners from the club include Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.
