The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) is facing a serious challenge over Russia’s possible return to international competition, The Athletic reported on Nov. 4.
Two major sponsors have threatened to end their partnerships with the organization if Russia’s national team plays in the 2027 World Championship in Germany, according to the report.
Czech automaker Škoda, the tournament’s primary official sponsor since 1993, said it does not support the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s decision to allow Russian teams to return to international competition.
“As long as Russian aggression continues, we believe the return of the Russian national team to the World Championship is incompatible with the values we have consistently upheld. If the Russian team participates in the tournament, we will review our partnership and consider further steps,” the company said in a statement.
German company Strauss, another official tournament sponsor, took an even stronger position. CEO Henning Strauss said that if Russia participates in the event, the company will withdraw its advertising from the championship and is considering ending its sponsorship agreement entirely.
Swedish office furniture manufacturer AJ Products and Finnish company Nokian Tyres have previously issued similar statements.
The IIHF’s problems extend beyond its sponsors. Several teams that have qualified for the 2027 championship have already said they will refuse to play against Russia, including Sweden and Norway.
The German Ice Hockey Federation warned that allowing Russia to participate could have serious security, political, and economic consequences for the host country.
Canadian PM Mark Carney also said Canada would not allow Russia’s national team to compete in the 2027 world junior championship, which begins Dec. 26 in Alberta.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport ordered the IIHF last week to allow Russian national teams to participate in international competitions. The federation banned Russia and Belarus after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
