Last Saturday, Lady Vols basketball took the floor in front of a public audience at Food City Center for a scrimmage against their male practice players. However, Tennessee was without a key piece in the scrimmage. Forward Fatmata Janneh was in a boot and not able to participate.

When meeting with the media on Thursday, Lady Vols head coach Kim Caldwell gave a positive update on Janneh’s status. She said she was back at practice. Janneh reaffirmed the statement, as well, saying she felt good. During the open period of practice, she was a full participant.

Janneh is in her first year with the Lady Vols after proving to be an effective SEC forward at Texas A&M a year ago. With the Aggies, the 6-foot-2 forward averaged 11.4 points per game on 43.3% shooting from the field. She also showed off an ability to hit from range, posting 1.1 makes per game on 33% shooting from three.

Perhaps Janneh’s biggest strength is her rebounding, though. She ripped down 9.7 boards per contest, good for the fifth-most in the SEC. This featured 2.6 rebounds on the offensive end per outing.

“I think she’s going to be one of the best rebounders in the SEC,” Caldwell said about Janneh on The Mike Keith Show this week. “She’s a very good three-point shooter. We’re trying to get her confidence up in her driving ability, but she is a scorer. And we’re going to need her to be a scorer for us more than just a rebounder. She’s a very underrated defender. She can guard multiple positions. We’ve got to keep her out of foul trouble because she does hack a lot.”

Janneh started her career with a pair of seasons at St. Peter’s. As a sophomore, she averaged a double-double, posting 18.2 points and 11.6 rebounds per game. This made a sought-after transfer in the portal before landing at Texas A&M as the nation’s leading defensive rebounder. As a freshman, she averaged 11.0 points and 8.0 rebounds.

The forward is from London, England, attending Barking Abbey Sixth Form for her prep ball. She is now the second player from England to join the roster. UT also added freshman and former Boston College signee Irene Oboavwoduo this offseason.
