Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital after collapsing at the club’s training ground on October 23.
Kompany collapsed while watching FC Bayern’s reserves train before being taken to hospital. The club later confirmed the incident on its official media platforms.
On October 24, Bayern sporting director Max Eberl provided an update on the Belgian’s condition, explaining that he was “stable” but would remain in hospital for a while longer.
“He'll only come back when he's fit,” Eberl said. “The tests have already yielded some results, but further results are needed to determine exactly what it is and how long it will take for him to recover. He’s in the best hands. The best thing we can do is support him emotionally with energy and love.”
Although Bayern initially considered requesting a postponement of their league match against Freiburg on October 25, they decided to fulfil the fixture. They went on to win 3-1 and maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign in the German top flight.
Bayern were back in action against Magdeburg in the DFB-Pokal on October 28, with Eberl issuing a positive update on Kompany’s health ahead of the match.
Eberl said the incident the previous Friday had been caused by meningeal irritation.
Kompany had been battling a viral infection in the weeks before the incident.
Eberl confirmed that Kompany would continue his recovery at home, but did not give a timeline for his return to work.
"They have found what it is. It is meningitis that caused this incident last Friday," Eberl said.
He added: “Then I am very, very sure that he will soon be back on the sidelines at 100 percent.”
According to the NHS, symptoms of the condition include:
The condition can be caused by different viruses or bacteria, which are transmitted through close contact with an infected person.
