McKenna and Corrigan fire Kinawley to Fermanagh title
Dara and Tomás Cathcart celebrate the Fermanagh Intermediate Football Championship title with their family.

A SUPERB display from Tiarnan McKenna and two second-half goals from Ruairi Corrigan helped Kinawley win the Fermanagh Intermediate Championship title in style on Sunday evening.

Kinawley produced an impressive attacking performance to overcome Devenish, with McKenna leading the charge before Corrigan’s second-half double helped put the outcome beyond doubt.

The winners made the perfect start when McKenna finished from close range to find the net and give Kinawley an early advantage.

Points from Donnacha Morris, Dara Cathcart and Ciaran Breen followed before McKenna converted a two-point free.

Boru’s take control

Cathcart added another score as Kinawley established control of the opening exchanges.

Devenish responded with points through Fionan O’Brien (2) and Terry O’Flanagan, but McKenna continued to trouble the defence, adding another point to maintain Kinawley’s momentum.

Jarlath O’Brien replied for Devenish before McKenna raised another white flag to leave Kinawley leading 1-09 to 0-04.

Devenish began to find their rhythm, with a two-pointer from Conall Maguire and a point from Jamie Flanagan bringing them back into contention.

Tomas Corrigan answered for Kinawley, however, as the sides headed for the dressing rooms with Kinawley holding a six-point advantage.

Kinawley made a sensational start to the second half when Ruairi Corrigan collected possession straight from the throw-in and produced a brilliant finish to the net.

Devenish refused to throw in the towel, responding with two-pointers from Jarlath O’Brien and Fionan O’Brien to cut the deficit to four points and put pressure back on the Kinawley defence.

Corrigan and Cathcart settled Kinawley with points, but Devenish continued to fight. Daniel McGovern landed a two-pointer to leave the score at 2-12 to 0-14, ensuring the contest remained alive.

McKenna added another point for Kinawley before Phillip McTeggart replaced Donnacha Morris with 15 minutes remaining.

Kinawley romp to victory

McGovern then converted a two-point free for Devenish, reducing the gap to five points and giving his side renewed hope of mounting a late challenge.

However, Kinawley delivered the decisive response through Corrigan.

The forward unleashed a superb 20-yard strike that flew into the roof of the Devenish net, a stunning finish that all but secured the championship for his side.

Matthew Ferguson replaced Tomas Cathcart in the 56th minute and Corrigan added another point as Kinawley continued to push forward.

Devenish grabbed a late goal through Cian O’Brien, but Kinawley had the final say.

Caolan Brennan came on for McKenna in the 60th minute before Ferguson found the net to put the finishing touch on a memorable day, with the Boru’s bouncing back to the senior championship.
