Hemp Strike Separates London City And Manchester City

The big shock from London City was a first WSL start for Mary Earps. The ex-England international had been resigned to the bench for the majority of the season, but Elene Lete found herself on the bench in the surprise decision for such a big fixture. Isobel Goodwin also found herself in the starting lineup ahead of Freya Godfrey and a start for Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas on the same week she received her award.

The first major chance of the match came from the home side, neither side looking fully comfortable until the 10th minute where a smart one-two between Jana Fernandez and Putellas saw the full back with an opportunity to shoot early on, but her shot was dragged wide of the left post.

Mary Earps was forced into an amazing save to somehow keep the score at 0:0 following a set piece. Rebecca Knaak headed on from the Alex Greenwood set piece but a goalkeeping marvel from the England legend kept the ball from going in for the away side. Grace Clinton failed to tap in the rebound much to the delight of Earps, who celebrated with the fans as the ball rolled behind.

London City were unfortunate not to have the lead themselves right before half time. Kadi Diani given the ball by a cross from Danielle van de Donk and only a last gasp deflection could send an almost certain goal over for a corner.

A Jana Fernandez goal wasn't enough to secure London City Lionesses a win in their "Battle Of The Cities" against second place Manchester City. Goals from Lauren Hemp and Bunny Shaw settled a tight and exciting affair that could prove crucial in the race for that second automatic Champions League spot, as London City were made to rue a number of missed chances come the full time whistle.

Despite London City's first half dominance, it was Manchester City who took the lead early in the second half. Bunny Shaw, clinical as ever, was played through by Lauren Hemp and did well to score. A wonderful piece of calm play to sit Mary Earps down who couldn't repeat her heroics from the first half as first blood went to the away side.

The equaliser should have come from the home side, and it would have come from a substitute. Nicole Anyomi had been electric since coming on, and when Corrales cut the ball back everyone expected the equaliser, but the German blazed the shot over the crossbar from point blank range.

London City did get the goal their dominance deserved and it was Jana Fernandez to score. A corner from Mapi Leon found its way to the full back to tie up the game with a header into the top corner.

The score wouldn't stay tied for long though and it was the away side to regain the lead. Lauren Hemp this time to add a second goal contribution with some expert positioning in the box to tap in from a Mary Fowler cross. Two goals in a matter of minutes left the last fifteen minutes very open.

Delphine Cascarino came on late and had the chance to change the game, with a number of half chances, but Manchester City held firm defensively to send the three points to Manchester and a six point gap between the two sides.
