In the space of two weeks the Red Roses have gone from enjoying a 41-match unbeaten streak to having lost twice in a row.
At Ottawa’s TD Place Stadium, Canada were 31-22 winners and wrapped up a three-Test victory against the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 champions in style to conclude their WXV Global Series campaign.
In total 13,170 supporters were present in the nation’s capital for the fixture. England did open the scoring first through Maddie Feaunati, but were left largely helpless as a Sophie de Goede brace, along with tries from Julia Omokhuale, DaLeaka Menin and Savannah Bauder wrapped up a famous victory for the hosts.
Here is how the Red Roses rated in Ottawa…
15. Emma Sing – 5
Coming into this game, Emma Sing’s name was on everyone’s lips. Her inclusion ahead of Ellie Kildunne was a huge decision from head coach John Mitchell. She did try to impose herself physically on the contest but to little reward. Sing led the game with turnovers lost [three] and was rounded by Savannah Bauder in the second half as Canada pulled clear. Registered a consolation try for England as the clock ticked into the red.
14. Mia Venner – 4.5
We did not get to see the very best of Mia Venner in this game. She missed a pair of tackles and only carried the ball once. Such was the nature of the game, the wing made 12 tackles and did win a turnover.
13. Megan Jones – 5.5
You can never deny Meg Jones’ effort level. She was regularly seen at the ruck and did make 10 tackles. Where her performance was let down was her game-high six tackles missed. A busy yet, ultimately, disappointing evening on the turf.
12. Helena Rowland – 5
Just never got a foothold in this fixture. Did not see enough of the ball in attack and was not hugely influential in defence, making nine tackles and missing two.
11. Jess Breach – 4.5
It was a Jess Breach carry in the first-half that accounted for the Red Roses’ sole line break of this fixture. Outside of that, it was a tough shift for the Saracens wing, who only carried the ball three times and made six tackles.
10. Zoe Harrison – 5.5
A fairly mixed bag from the playmaker. She was at fault for Sophie de Goede’s first half score due to her miscommunication with Lucy Packer. Outside of that moment, Harrison showed a good amount of pragmatism in her approach to the game with a series of good kicks and looked at the posts when the Red Roses were handed an opportunity to score early in the second half. Subbed in the 50th minute for Holly Aitchison.
9. Lucy Packer – 5
It was not the most-assured performance from the scrum-half on Friday night in Ontario. She turned the ball over once and, along with Zoe Harrison, was at fault for Sophie de Goede’s try. Subbed early in the second half as Mitchell attempted to add some zip to his team.
1. Hannah Botterman – 5.5
A fairly busy stint on the pitch for Hannah Bottterman. The loosehead prop During Botterman’s time on the pitch, England enjoyed a 100% success rate at the scrum. Left the pitch at the 50-minute mark for Mackenzie Carson.
2. Amy Cokayne – 5.5
A reasonably solid performance from the England hooker in a disappointing display. She scored a try at the back of a dominant lineout maul early in the second half and was powerless to prevent Canada from taking charge of the fixture. Left the fray in the 64th minute for Bryony Field.
3. Sarah Bern – 5.5
One of England’s top performers during her 50-minute outing. Completed 19 tackles, seven carries and contributed to a solid England scrum too. Like a number of her teammates, Sarah Bern struggled to get in a rhythm and really leave a mark on this game.
4. Morwenna Talling – 5
We did see Morwenna Talling’s usual uncompromising defence on Ottawa. But that was about it from the Sale Sharks lock, who also completed nine carries on the pitch.
5. Lilli Ives Campion – 4.5
As you have come to expect from Lilli Ives Campion, it was a very busy performance from the lock forward. She completed 23 tackles, but was culpable for De Goede’s second try as the guard at the ruck.
6. Abi Burton – 5.5
Along with Sadia Kabeya, Abi Burton was one of the Red Roses’ top ball carriers at TD Place. Even so, while the back-row usually knocks down plenty of doors with her carries, on Friday she made just 19 metres. She also completed 17 tackles in the loss.
7. Sadia Kabeya – 5.5
The busy kind of performance you expect from Sadia Kabeya at this point. She made 18 tackles and 11 carries in the loss but struggled to have a significant influence on the clash.
8. Maddie Feaunati – 5.5
After she scored the game’s opening try, Maddie Feaunati did not see herself grow any more into the game. Her 10 carries did not equate to many metres and did make 16 tackles at TD Place, but it was a quiet night in all honesty.
Replacements – 4.5
Much like a week ago, England’s replacements did not have any impact on this game. They struggled to do anything that could shift momentum back in their direction or break Canada out of their stride.
