It was a reality check of an afternoon for Florida in Atlanta, and the ABC booth calling it drew some heat of its own. No. 3 Georgia led 24-0 at halftime on its way to a 27-8 rout of No. 17 Florida at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Some fans poked fun at Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit’s commentary during the game, criticizing the way the duo called the action. Fowler handled play-by-play, while Herbstreit provided analysis on ABC’s broadcast, but their commentary left more than a few viewers unimpressed.
The game itself was one-sided almost from the start. Ellis Robinson IV intercepted a pass on Florida’s first possession to set up Nate Frazier’s 1-yard touchdown run, and another interception in the second quarter led to a 28-yard Peyton Woodring field goal.
During the game, one fan wrote in a post that made the rounds: “You can almost hear how disappointed Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit are calling this game.”
Other fans backed it up. “Fact!” a fan wrote.
Another fan agreed: “It’s so obvious.”
The fan behind the original post later came back to the theme in a reply to another user, writing, “It’s somewhat enjoyable hearing their frustration.”
Another fan went after Herbstreit’s work as a whole: “The more I listen to Kirk Herbstreit, the more I realize he’s just not someone to be taken seriously. He adds nothing to a broadcast.”
Meanwhile, another fan chimed in with a two-word comment.
The most specific complaint came late. Florida’s best chance to score before then, a third-quarter drive that began at the Georgia 45, ended with Braylon Conley’s interception.
The Gators’ only takeaway finally set up points when DJ Coleman forced a fumble that Myles Graham recovered in the fourth quarter. Nine plays later, Jones ran in from 2 yards out, and Jadan Baugh threw to Dallas Wilson for a two-point conversion that cut the deficit to 24-8.
One fan focused on that stretch, opening with “Kirk Herbstreit is so horrible.”
However, the conversion did change the margin, turning an 18-point deficit into a 16-point one that two touchdowns with two-point conversions could tie. But Georgia answered with a nine-play, 61-yard drive that ended in Woodring’s 21-yard field goal with 3:34 left, making it 27-8.
Florida’s next possession ended on downs at its own 31, and the Gators never got closer than 16 points in the second half.
