Régis Le Bris and his Sunderland side travel to Coventry City today looking to lift themselves off the bottom of the Premier League table.
The clash gives the Black Cats the chance to leapfrog Frank Lampard’s side in the table, but defeat would leave them further adrift from safety after a challenging start to the season. It’s a massive day for Sunderland as ever, we’ll be at the ground to bring you all the updates you need right throughout the afternoon in our live blog below...
Their strong performances in midweek have left many fans hoping they might be in the starting XI today, but might Jules Ahoka and Jocelin Ta Bi miss out on the squad entirely?
Timur Tutierov is another who could miss out if all of Le Bris’s senior options are fit. So it’s all eyes on the bench as well as the starting XI.
Ta Bi made a huge impression on Wednesday though Le Bris did hint in his pre-match press conference this week that he sees him as more of an impact player in the league:
Probably it's a bit early [to start regularly], but with wingers, you can give them game time at the end of the game. We have a starter, probably a bit more mature for the first part of the game. It's often required. It's possible to play with one side, and then if you play with both sides with two young wingers, I think it's difficult for the balance of the squad. You can come on for the last 20, 25, 30 minutes when the game is a bit more open. Wednesday was a good example.
The big question mark for Coventry City is over centre back Bobby Thomas, who picked up a calf injury in the defeat to Fulham last weekend.
He’d be a significant absentee with summer signing Aurele Amenda already out for an extended period in that position, though Man City loanee Stephen Mfuni is on standby to play.
Elsewhere, Haji Wright and Josh Eccles remain absent as they continue their recovery from injury.
Le Bris did confirm that Wilson Isidor had trained with the squad this week, and so will hopefully able to return to the bench today.
That would be a big boost for Sunderland.
While the club’s injury list has almost now fully cleared, Nordi Mukiele remains a big concern ahead of this one.
The defender was of course forced off with a throat issue last week and while Le Bris is confident it is not a serious issue, the extent of his involvement today remains in doubt.
It would be a big blow for the Black Cats if he’s out, having already had to field six central defensive pairings this season due to form, injury and suspension.
While it is still very early days in terms of the season as a whole, this is a big day in Sunderland’s campaign.
The draw with Leeds United was a step in the right direction after the defeat at Bournemouth, and a good Carabao Cup win further lifted the mood on Wearside.
Despite the numerous positives, Sunderland’s league position speaks for itself and they need wins on the board sooner rather than later.
This game is a huge opportunity, but also carries huge risk.
A massive game, and as ever we’ll be there to bring to you every kick.
