ORCHARD PARK - The old saying in the NFL goes roughly something like, you never notice special teams until you notice them. Meaning, if you’re noticing a kicking game play, it’s usually because something went wrong that could alter the outcome of a game.

Sunday afternoon at Highmark Stadium when the Buffalo Bills host the Baltimore Ravens in a key AFC game, which is always the case when these two teams play, most eyes will be focused on the electric quarterback matchup between Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson.

But one of the intangibles that typically gets ignored in a heavyweight game between playoff contenders is the play of the special teams, and in that area, the Bills have a significant advantage. Pro Football Focus grades Buffalo’s special teams No. 1 in the NFL while it has the Ravens at No. 18.

“I think coach Rodgers does an incredible job,” head coach Joe Brady said of the veteran that he hired back in January. “We said going back to OTAs, you want to see the type of football team you want to be, watch your special teams, and watch how they fly around. Watch how they celebrate with one another. Watch how important it is when we're out there trying to win fourth down.”

The Bills have built a quality unit anchored by kicker Tyler Bass who is 13-for-13 on field goals, rookie punter Tommy Doman who has placed six of his league-low 12 punts inside the 20, return men Ray Davis and Greg Dortch, and coverage men like Joe Andreessen, Sam Franklin, Javon Solomon and Michael Hoecht.

“I thought the Vegas game they were outstanding, and last week in the team meeting I think I showed every kickoff because there were just so many different people getting in on making plays, and just seeing the impact that it has on the sideline,” Brady said.

After earning an All-Pro selection for leading the NFL in kickoff return average, Ray Davis’s 31.0 average is second among those with at least 10 attempts, and he’ll be going against a Baltimore coverage unit that ranks 28th with a 28.7 average per return. On punts, Dortch ranks 10th with a 10.1 average, though he may have a tougher go against a Ravens unit that ranks ninth allowing 8.8 yards per return.

“Our special teams is playing like it's the ethos of our football team and they have to continue that and we can't take steps backwards,” Brady said.
