Spurs registered their first Premier League win of the season on Monday, beating Coventry City 3-1 at home. The win eased some pressure off Roberto De Zerbi, and it could help turn Tottenham’s season around. However, their next assignment couldn’t get any tougher.
The Lilywhites have a dismal record at Stamford Bridge, winning just once in the Premier League era. That victory came under former boss Mauricio Pochettino back in 2018, and Roberto De Zerbi has backed his boys to end the Stamford Bridge jinx.
Jamie Carragher and Alan Shearer have backed Chelsea to continue their dominance in this fixture. Now, Chris Sutton has jumped in with his prediction of the London derby. He has projected more misery for Tottenham in West London, backing the hosts to emerge victorious 3-1.
“We were talking on the Monday Night Club about what Chelsea could do this season without any European football,” Chris Sutton said in his BBC column.
“Tottenham are not in Europe either, of course, but they do not look like they are going to be challenging at the top of the table the way Xabi Alonso’s side are.
“People keep saying how Chelsea’s attack is so good, but their 2-0 win over Everton last time out was their first clean sheet of the campaign in the league, and that side of things still needs to improve.
“Spurs, meanwhile, do seem to be getting better, albeit slowly.
“It was a big result for them to beat Coventry on Monday, but they have an awful record at Stamford Bridge, with only one win there in the Premier League era. I do not see them getting anything this time, either.”
De Zerbi provided a mixed injury update of his squad ahead of the game. He ruled out Destiny Udogie, whilst confirming both James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski are doubtful for the trip to Stamford Bridge.
In positive news, Pedro Porro is back from a hamstring injury, and the likes of Omar Marmoush, Andy Robertson and Tosin Adarabioyo are all available. De Zerbi will need all the available resources to fight and get a win on Saturday.
