Bruno Fernandes’ latest Manchester United comments ‘expose’ the problems at the club, according to Premier League winner Kasper Schmeichel. United endured a miserable evening in Italy as they fell to a 4-1 defeat against Como in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Michael Carrick’s side were 1-0 down at half-time thanks to Nico Paz’s early goal. Things got worse after the break with goals from Anastasios Douvikas, Paz and Jacobo Ramon putting the Serie A side into a commanding lead.
Joshua Zirkzee did score a consolation goal for United in added time, but it was too little too late. The result has piled pressure on Carrick, although the manager will take charge of the weekend’s Premier League clash vs Bournemouth.
Following the loss, club captain Fernandes appeared to question Carrick’s tactics. Speaking to BBC Five Live’s Football Daily, Schmeichel has said that shows the problems that exist around the club.
"Michael Carrick doesn't need this, the club didn't need this, and what it is, it's exposing all the issues that are at Manchester United and it's very plain to see that there are a lot of issues,” he said. “You need to be fixing them, you need to be having meetings within the club, which I'm sure they are.
“But it's obviously not resolved because there's some frustrations there that aren't resolved and it's just translating onto the pitch."
Fernandes has been criticised for the comments. Schmeichel has said that they may be due to a disconnect between the board and the players, although he feels that the club captain could handle the situation better.

"I've been in situations myself where as a player you feel like the management or the club aren't aligned from top to bottom and you kind of feel lonely out there, and I think that's what Bruno Fernandes is doing,” he said. “He's reacting to maybe feeling alone out there.

“I watched him in the game and his reaction, his body language wasn't great, and I think that's frustration. But I do also think that given this last week and what's happened, as a captain you need to be thinking about the team, what's going to help the team get into a situation to win football games? And that's just not going to be doing it."
Fernandes is not the only player to air his frustrations over the last few days. Defender Lisandro Martinez hit out at club chiefs following the defeat against Atletico Madrid last week.
The Argentine was sanctioned by the club and issued an apology. United will not punish Fernandes for his comments, despite there being internal disappointment within the club.
